Dive bar. Check. Smoking permitted. Check. Louis Armstrong playing in the background. Check. Free wifi. Check. Came across this place while getting lost in Copenhagen. Definitely a good place to stop by for a beer or two while sightseeing. If you’re a non-smoker, this place might not appeal to you.

Palæ Bar reminds me of visiting my best friend’s grandparents: everything is interesting, probably from way before your time and you are welcomed with open arms by the lovely lady behind the counter. They serve the most amazing beer, and I would recommend the darker sorts, e.g. Grimbergen Double with a homemade«smørbrød»(ie. sandwich). A beautiful rest from busy, touristy Copenhagen. Worthy of a visit!

This is definitely one of my go to’s after work. It’s a great hyggelig little bodega right around the corner from Kongens Nytorv. The décor is jazz inspired along with the background music. They have one of my favorite beers on tap Grimberger Dark. The only downside is the smoking inside, but I have become accustomed to that since living here. This place is a great bar to get a feel of the local vibe and to get some good people watching in.

It pays to talk to the locals. We found out about this oasis from a new friend made at Bo Bi Bar, a chatty middle-aged gentleman already in his cups by 5 pm or so. We stopped in for a mid-afternoon tipple and enjoyed the atmosphere, the beer, and the always-in-motion multitasking bartender. This is a bar that celebrates jazz both in the background music and the wall art. The kitchen, from the glimpses I caught, looks pretty much like one you’d find in someone’s house, and the smørrebrød coming out for other patrons looked pretty tasty.
