If you’re looking for one of those Thai takeaways with a menu the size of one of the later Harry Potter books, where every dish is available with chicken, pork, beef and probably also prawns or duck according to your preference there’s nothing here for you. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a cosy little Thai restaurant with more focus on the quality of the dozen or so dishes on the menu you’ve come to the right place. Visually this place looks more like a living room than a restaurant, save of course for the fact that there are more tables and chairs than in most peoples homes. Yet, the atmosphere reminds me of a road side diner in Thailand — on a busy day you easily end up sharing a table with one or two other groups of people, and don’t be surprised if you(gasp!) end up rubbing shoulders and exchanging conversation with your table mates. The service is pragmatic but friendly, and competent enough that I’ve never seen them mess up an order. As mentioned above the menu isn’t huge, but there’s enough variation that you’ll easily find something that appeals to you. The food is expertly cooked and you can taste that the ingredients are of good quality. According to their website Ranee’s has fresh produce flown in from Thailand twice a week and they don’t use frozen vegetables; my taste buds believe this claim is true. The prices are reasonable but not cheap, with main dishes starting around 125, — or so. All in all a place worth coming back to.
