The Pure Bread — it took me awhile to figure out what Det Rene Brød meant. When we first moved here — I will embarrassingly admit that I thought it meant some guy named Rene’s bread. I was sure Rene knew what the hell he was doing when it came to making bread. It is excellent here. Fell in love at first bite. But it really means the PUREBREAD — and they use all organic, natural ingredients at this cozy little bakery in Østerbro. Danes know how to make bread. There is a saying in Danish — spis lige brød — «eat bread» — basically means take a chill pill. And if you’re going to eat bread — it may as well be organic and DELICIOUS. The Danish classic rye bread — rugbrød is dense and seedy and fantastic. If you ask — they will slice it for you — which I recommend. My kids LOVE the kanelsnegls — which directly translates to «cinnamon snails» aka a cinnamon roll. If you like sweet, try the hindbær snitte(akin to an organic yummy Danish pop-tart complete with pink frosting and sprinkles.) The mandel kage(almond cake) is moist and excellent. The Moroccan orange cake is amazing — you can buy a half cake if you don’t want to commit to the whole thing — but if you do — it is almost better the next day. Need something not so sweet to take on your next picnic? Buy the Verona bolle — perfect chewy texture to fill with your favorite sandwich fixings. They make a whole loaf in the same style which my kids will tear into and does NOT last long at our house. Want a little more grain and health with your sandwich or morning bread? I love the Gulerød Bolle(don’t try to pronounce it) — its the carrot bun with pumpkin seeds on top. Perfect texture and weight — try it the Danish way — cut in half, smeared with a little smør(butter) and topped with a slice of Danise thise ost(sliced white cheese.) This location has a few places to sit and enjoy your baked goods with a coffee or juice. And while there may better purveyors of coffee — a strong cortado with my favorite morning treat — the charmingly named frøsnapper — a slightly sweet poppy seeded flaky twist — is a perfect match. Det Rene Brød will make you realize that Danish baking is much much more than the«Danish» you may stereotype them for and that France is not the only place for excellent bread.

Very comfortable environment and friendly staff. And most important, amazing pastries. We stayed and read as we enjoyed our pastries, and it was so fun to people watch. Definitely recommending this place to fellow travelers.

I came by this place by accident when taking a wrong turn. The bakery is organic(love it already) and offers a wide selection of cakes and bread. There’s seating in the bakery, so you can sit down and enjoy a coffee or breakfast before work, or you can drop by to get stuff«to go» like a «normal» bakery. I came pretty close to clothing hours, so many of their bread was already sold out. I bought two different breads, one of them«fluffy» with sour dough and a «compact» one. The last was like a white rye bread — I’ve never tried that before. But both were tasty. The only thing I could miss would be some breads without flour(paleo/cave man), a better selection of rye bread(rugbrød) and perhaps even some protein buns or some«healthy» bread. Next time I go there, I want to try some of their cakes(speaking of healthy) — they looked delicious and weren’t too pricey like many of the other bakeries…
