Hiljainen, mutta rento meininki maanantaina. Kerrankin juoman sai tilattua nopeasti. Yleisilme vähän nuhjuinen, mutta kuuluu paikan charmiin.

I’m hesitating to even write this, because I don’t want Corona to become any more crowded than it already is on Friday and Saturday nights. But, well, I love this place. I love it for the bad coffee on cold afternoons, for the cheap sparkling wine, for the famously unfriendly staff, for the unpredictable(to put it mildly) breakfasts, for the fact that I always run into friends here. This is the closest I’ve come to a living-room-in-a-bar in this city. So please, save me a table.

The number one place to play billiard in Helsinki is unaccountably Corona Bar. Several billiard tables are available here — one for snookers nine for pool. On the weekend you should be early or otherwise got to wait a bit. Once you have a table you can play as long as you like and pay by time later. And this place has an interesting history too. 20 years ago it was founded by the world famous Finnish directors Aki and Mika Kaurismäki in the style of a laid back New York street bar. Prices for drinks are very reasonable here.

Corona is down the street from my husband’s office and has a great event space downstairs, making it the perfect place for after-work drinks or for throwing or attending events. I prefer Corona on weekdays around 1700, before the place is packed and getting a drink or a seat can be daunting. Cheap drinks, billiards, and heat lamps so warm that I can sit outside in sub-zero weather at night in nothing but a tank top(and pants, of course). The bartenders are all incredibly nice and the grilled cheese sandwiches have saved a friend or two from drunkety-drunkenness on several occasions. Plus they’re not just functional: they’re also delicious. All around a good dive-y bar to hit up for drinks and jovial atmosphere. On the weekends it can get quite crazy, so go early.

A bar and billiard hall owned by the film director brothers Aki and Mika Kaurismäki, echoing the melancholic mood of their films. Overall, it is a true beer place drawing mainly students and tourists, although there is really nothing special to see here. Music is 80s style.
