We enjoyed walking around this market on our last trip to Helsinki. They open early and have a handful of café stalls with coffee and crepes or pastries. Great for passing some time people watching, especially with the Jazz trio playing nearby. The veggies and fruits were gorgeous, but alas we went here on our last day so we couldn’t buy anything.

Helsinki Finland Hakaniemi Market Square is a really cool place to try some of the traditional Finnish foods, treats, handcrafts and souvenirs. There are a lot of clothing booths and many places that sell sausages and fried fish. This is a nice place to spend an hour but to be honest, I am not sure why it is ranked as high as it is.

A very popular place for groceries and finding a Finnish souvenier is the kauppatori at the end of Esplanadi. Unfortunately the crows of tourists and the central location have a big impact on the price level there. A good alternative is the market in Hakaniemi. This is the place where the locals prefer to go. Fruit and vegetables are way cheaper here and if you want to have a short break from the shopping and like to enjoy the market atmosphere just stop by at one of the café tents and get reasonably prices coffee and some Finnish pastry. Next to the market square you find the Hakaniemi Kauppahalli. It is comparable to the one at the Esplanadi. The interior is just not quite as nice. Still you find a big variety of groceries and might even be lucky to get some good deals. Both markets are open from Monday to Saturday.

If you get tired of hustlers, pickpockets and seaguls in Kauppatori, try this marketplace instead. Being more working class, Hakaniemen tori still has a genuine marketplace feel to it. Needless to say it is way less touristy. Lot of interesting characters wondering around the square and sipping their morning coffee, from homeless persons and other outcast to the most important finnish politicians.
