Open on New Years Day! The waitress was really pleasant and attentive. A tad bit pricey but the spring rolls were delicious, not greasy. The chicken pad Thai was also good, not greasy or over cooked. Atmosphere was calm and I sat for awhile, waitress didn’t rush me out.

Extra points for making it really spicy! I really appreciate a Thai place that brings the heat. She might have been taking out her anger on me for showing up right before closing time but when I asked for it spicy, she wasn’t messing around. The green papaya salad was delicious. Fresh, green papaya and nice flavors. The green curry was a little lacking in the flavor department but overall not bad.

This restaurant has several choices for vegan and gluten-free folks. My husband has celiac disease, and we have both been vegan for decades, so we’re always in search of accommodating restaurants during our travels. Ryan Thai was a welcome respite on our first night, when we were jet-lagged and desperately in need of sustenance. The person who seated us gave us the false impression that all of their soy sauce was gluten-free, which could have ended very badly for my husband.(For that mistake they lose a star.) Fortunately our server took the trouble to check with the kitchen and reported back which dishes were soy-sauce free and appropriate. We had a red vegetable curry with tofu and a green vegetable curry with tofu, and both were delicious. There is a vegetarian section of the menu — all of those dishes are vegan too — so veg folks who aren’t facing the gluten-free constraint will have more to choose from. I would add back a star if the restaurant adopted notation on the menu to indicate which items are gluten-free and if they stocked gluten-free soy sauce, which is becoming more common at Asian restaurants. Incidentally, Finland appears to be above average compared to other countries(certainly compared to most cities in North America) in their awareness about gluten-free diets. Many restaurants do use gluten-free notation on menus and/or carry gluten-free bread. Looking forward to trying Ryan Thai again. The restaurant, by the way, has a fairly well-stocked bar. And they offer a 10% discount for take-out. Their full menu:

Great atmosphere! Okay food and prices. I stumbled into Ryan Thai looking for dinner as I walked from Central Station back to the Hilton Strand after a day out in the suburbs. I really liked that the signs directed me up a flight of stairs that instantly transported me out of the brick and concrete streets of Helsinki to the lacquered wood and plants of Thailand. The restaurant is on the second floor and offers an elegant dining room with fairly authentic-looking décor and furnishings. I had a panang curry which was good and filling but not special. Service was more than adequate. I noticed quite a few Thai customers so maybe my dish was not repreentative of the quality available.
