Me Tarzan, You Jane ! Nothing is more primal than smelling grilled meat. While staying at a hotel nearby in Clichy, there were plenty of great French dining options, I have dined at many, but I just couldn’t resist this place on my last day in Paris(well, almost Paris). Aside from the funky exterior décor, the food and trimmings were fantastic. Great value for the meal & Hungry Man. I can’t imagine this restaurant opening in the States on account of the endless lawsuits brought on by patrons burning themselves on the hot stones. I loved the set up however. Eat up and Drink up whenever you’re in the Clichy area craving for meat. Highly recommended !

I’d avoided this place every time I walked near it. The English name. The cow logo. The ridiculously cheap prices bandied about out front. It all smacked of desperation. Then one night I was walking by and smelled… beef. Grilling beef! Unable to resist the scent of roasting meat, I decided to brave it and go in. The décor can be seen in one of two ways: Cheap and tacky, or rustic and charming. I decided to be an optimist and pretend it’s the latter. The menus on offer are fairly simple, and for dinner, the EUR15 combo of your choice of entrées and one main course(read: MEAT) should get anyone through just fine. Particularly if you choose the buffet as your opener. Yes, in the land where everyone is so skinny they risk being swept away by north Atlantic winds, there is a buffet. And while not quite invoking the Viking imagery of Valhalla and all its overflowing tables of meat and vegetables and fish and cheeses, the spread here is fairly sizeable, with every type of salad you’d see at a typical American buffet(pasta salad, tuna salad, bean salad, etc., etc.) along with more smorgassbord type items like cold fish and various meats. Add to that an array of fresh vegetables(hooray for color!) and you’re looking at a potentially balanced meal. And then comes the main course to throw you deliciously off balance. Your steak(or whatever you choose) comes out cold and raw, sitting atop a super-heated tile of marble. It’s on this marble that you cook the steak yourself, meaning it will always be to your liking, and if it’s over– or under-cooked, you have only yourself to blame. Not that cooking your own meat over a hot rock is difficult. Our hairy, big-headed forefathers did it for thousands of years before us, and now we have the benefit of forks, knives, and — here in France — mustard. And just in case you are of the Gallic persuasion and can’t imagine having your steak without frites(or an American who solidly believes in meat n’ potatoes), they offer four styles of potatoes as a side for your protein. Sure, you have to serve yourself at the buffet, then cook your main course yourself, but there’s one thing that Fire & Stone really has going for it: Value. A word that rarely comes up anymore when dining in the environs of Paris.
