My wife and I were on our way back to our flat after a visit to Notre Dame de la Garde. It was 3pm and every other restaurant we passed was closed for food. Not unusual for that time of day, but we had planned poorly and were now famished. When we walked in, the man behind the bar, who we presumed was the owner or manager, who spoke enough English to help us weary Americans without our having to resort to the clunky French we know, asked if we were hungry and then brought a table outside for us, offered us cheeseburgers, Orangina, an beer. It was exactly what we were hoping for. And we weren’t disappointed. The burgers were a nice size. Not too small, but not huge. Crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle, with a nice garden, a sesame seed bun(complete with panini grill marks), and a delicious whole mustard seed honey dijon.(Plus frittes, of course!) The meal was far less than we expected to pay, so we tipped generously, and the owner thanked us(!), and we left feeling full and fortunate to have stumbled upon a delicious, friendly, and affordable meal so late in the afternoon.
