If you miss the days of unique saxophone stores and are tired of the endless drone of large impersonal national chains, you must get to Atelier Sax Machine, located near 2 different metro stops in Paris. This is a small shop crammed with all manner of saxes old and new. On a recent visit to Paris, I visited them and had a fantastic time there — and actually walked out with a soprano.(I resisted the urge to buy their beautiful old bass sax…) They’ve got a great collection of instruments, and a stellar collection of mouthpieces and ligatures. Plus, Fumie, the woman there who helped me, was very knowledgable, patient, and helpful. She gave me lots of different sopranos to try out; she set me up in a fairly large room so I could spend time with each horn, and she did a great job of explaining the process of the VAT. She did all the paperwork and even gave me a self-addressed stamped envelope so all I had to do is get the receipt stamped at the airport and drop it into a post box. Highly recommended! Their website is really in two places:
