This place was one of the highlights of our visit. We arrived about 45 minutes before it was officially open. I missed the «sans public» part of the 1830 event (a workshop). We were welcomed and hung out at the table in the bar area. Drinking wine and sharing a very tasty sandwich. At 2030 we found a seat in the intimate concert room (it seats about 30 people) and were treated to an evening of some excellent music by a jazz trio. No sign of the mouse that one reviewer saw. I highly recommend this place. Their website is in French but contains current information. Watch out for «sans public.» I suggest arriving early to get a seat and if your lucky a small table to set your drink. There was no cover charge.

Went here with a friend. Cool cave venue downstairs, and very friendly staff, especially the bartender. My friend and I are really into jazz and were a bit disappointed with the concert. Hard when there is no bass or drums (just piano and tenor sax). Granted it was a Wednesday, so probably not one of the bigger shows, but I’m pretty sure we were the only folks not personal friends of the owner or musicians in there. Also, as cool as the venue was, my friend and I couldn’t help but be distracted by a mouse scurrying to and fro in the bar area. We were just having drinks so we weren’t worried, but they were selling sandwiches, so I’m glad we weren’t eating those. I think my friend and I would check out other options before coming again, but if I could see folks having a good time here too.

Super coup de coeur qu’est cette salle de Jazz intimiste à 2 pas de l’hôtel de ville.
En passant 2 escaliers vous arriverez dans une cave voutée et vous retrouverez plongé au coeur du Paris Jazz des années 50.
Pour 10 € vous pourrez donc écouter un concert de Jazz et passé le concert vient la session Jam où n’importe quel musicien peut se joinde au groupe et improviser sur des classiques ou pas.
On apprécie: le bar au fond de la cave qui sert des bières Demory et un très bon sandwich selon le gérant ^^

.. it was our first trip to Paris and we were looking for an authentic jazz club off the beaten path.
This is it.
It is a very intimate venue; you will literally be sitting inches or feet away from the band, but that is what makes it so special. It’s a sense of belonging, of community that will bring us back. Even though we were probably the only Americans in the room, we nodded our heads, snapped our fingers and shuffled our feet to the voices of the singers and the melodies of the musicians.
It was a jam session we will never forget.
Get there early and enjoy yourself.

We stumbled upon 38 Riv while walking after dinner during our first night in Paris. The entrance left little to go by. «jazz here» is about all I got, so out of curiosity we walked in, down 2 flights of stairs to a cellar. Poked our heads into the barrelled brick room and I was immediately hooked. Intimate little room, bar in the back, everyone attentively listening to the live jazz. after a couple of songs the band members changed and I realized it was an open jam session. Whoever brought an instrument was welcome to take their turn. We ended up staying for hours. What a memorable night!

Maintes fois j’ai arpenté la rue de Rivoli et jamais je n’ai prêté attention au numéro 38
Une devanture rouge affichant ” la Cave du 38 Riv’ «et laissant à penser qu’une ambiance jazzy règne dans ce lieu
«Entrée libre» alors pourquoi né pas aller y jeter un coup d’oeil
Une fois descendue l’étroit escalier, vous arriverez dans une belle cave voutée très intimiste
Plusieurs soirs de la semaine, vous pouvez profiter ici de sessions jazz .
Découverte de la Jam Session «le Boeuf sauce piquante» du lundi à 20h30 (expérimentés et pros) …un concert où les musiciens de Jazz mêlent leur art et nous emportent avec talent sur de grands morceaux, jusqu’à très tard.
Petit +: un bar vous propose sandwich, charcuteries, fromages et boissons pour des prix très raisonnables (2,50 € à 7 €)
Une excellente adresse pou un moment Jazzy !

Visite musicale
La Cave du 38 Riv’ est un lieu exceptionnellement convivial. Après être descendu au 2ème sous-sol dans une salle aux pierres apparentes du XII ou XIIIème Siècle, on est tout de suite épris par l’atmosphère chaleureuse. J’y étais déjà plusieurs fois lors de concerts (jazz et baroque) mais aussi aux fameuses jams (dans ses trois versions: pour débutants, pros ainsi qu’une version acoustique pour ceux qui aiment entendre les finesses musicales). Les jams sont devenues de véritables institutions ou de jeunes musiciens parisiens et internationnaux se réunissent dans de formations toujours très intéressantes et fructueuses. L’atmosphère lors des concerts est très intimiste et familiale. Après les concerts, le public se mèle souvent aux musiciens autour d’un verre au bar pour profiter d’un échange amical. Ce n’est pas pour rien que le patron du lieu, vincent Charbonnier (lui-même musicien), a pour devise: «la Cave du 38 Riv’, le lieu où tout arrive».
