I liked finding an Asian eatery, even though they were serving late night, steam table fare. Sometimes, when hungry, you don’t want to wait. It was all very pretty and enticing, but the flavors were pretty tame. I might have been spoiled living near Vietnamese communities in Southern California where most patrons are other Vietnamese and desire the spicy, pungent flavorings of home. DET isn’t bad — just mellow.

Out of the month I spent in Paris, I ate here every night for 2.5 weeks. My budget really only allowed extravagant lunches and my dinner budget was tight. I’d even have leftovers for breakfast from this, when I needed to stretch it out. Otherwise, I was cramming my face with heart explosive butter laden pastries So, check it out. The owner is a kind and patient Vietnamese woman that immigrated to France during the Vietnam War. How we managed to communicate beats me, I was literally reduced to caveman grunts and sign language overtaken with intimidation. It’s the same concept as a hot wok, except it’s a cold wok. They present everything to you in the same manner, all pretty food in hotel pans behind a clear refrigerated glass case. You tell them how much you want, they put it in clear PLASTIC(you hear that America, not Styrofoam, plastic) take-out containers, heat it up in the zapper and off you go. How the hell they can put this into the microwave and have it still retain its fried crispiness is a damn mystery. They call Pot stickers raviolis, except these were much lighter and fluffier. The filling not at all greasy and didn’t leave a rock in your stomach. The egg rolls are Imperials and they too retained that crunch after being zapped. It was a perfect meat to veg ratio and not skimping out by shoving a bunch of random veg inside. Then there was some Poulet du Caramel, which is like… uhh…peking chicken? Good rice. Once, the boy I met in Paris and I both ate aforementioned meal for under 10 euros. And were both stuffed to the gills. Every other night I went into the neighborhood wine shop, bought a bottle of wine and then walked across the street to the Traiteur. The Vietnamese woman started to recognize me and she’d smile when I walked in and gave an enthusiastic greeting. She didn’t need to ask anymore if I wanted her to warm my food up. She started throwing in free pot stickers and egg rolls. Then she started giving me samples to munch on while I waited in line! It was this small touch of home I created out of the neighborhood to prevent me from becoming homesick, it helps that I’m a jolly chubchub. «Hey fat girl, come here are you ticklish?»
