Seeing this place again made me bipolar in an instant. I’m very happy for Madame Michelle and Monsieur Philippe that they have renovated their restaurant and so must be doing well. But I’m also very sad that the days of 19 Euro 3-course prix-fixe menus are gone forever. This place is a hidden gem of the 7th district and used to be the best value around. My first time going was in 2005 and have gone back to it every time I’m in Paris. There were only 2 times that I was disappointed when I went to L’Auberge: one time was because they were closing and the other time was because they were closed. Every food that my friends and I have tasted here has been delicious! The escargot, served in a 6 indented plate complete with snail tongs and snail fork, are a perfect blend of buttery and garlicky goodness. I’d wipe my escargot plate clean with the provided bread if there weren’t people in the restaurant. Their foie gras is so flavorful that it’s making me drool just remembering it and makes you forget how this controversial dish is made. The crème brûlée gives a satisfying crack when you break through the caramelized top and reveal the scrumptious rich vanilla custard underneath. I can go on and on about the food but why are you still reading this?! Go in there and try it! The menu has changed but I’m sure the quality has not budged a millimeter. In case you’re still interested, Madame Michelle serves in front and her English has been steadily improving and expanding over the years. Monsieur Philippe speaks much better English and is the master chef who creates the masterpieces that you’re going to savor. Both are very friendly and I’ve even been able to engage M. Philippe in a conversation after dinner service was finished. Remember that this is a hidden gem but definitely worth the effort to find it. Each time I try to find it I feel like I’m in an episode of Amazing Race trying to find a checkpoint. Bön appetit!

While my wife and I stayed at the Hotel de l’Alma on Rue de l’Exposition back in 2009, we strolled by this small obscure restaurant located just a few steps from our hotel. We decided to give a try and were not disappointed. Albeit, the décor and ambiance was very dated, the food was really, really good. Just a week ago, while in Paris again, my wife and I were looking forward to dining at our favorite restaurant, Restaurant De la Tour, but were turned away because we did not have reservations, we were really bummed and decided to walk down Avenue Saint Dominique where Christian Constant has 3 eating establishments on this street. There was a 45 minute wait, so we deferred back to L’Auberge on Rue de l’Exposition. As we walked in, we were very pleasantly greeted with a renovated restaurant that was modernly chic and classy. As we sat down, we were handed an updated menu with very modern choices. The owners, Michele & Philippe have done a tremendous makeover of their restaurant both with the décor and especially with the food! In a city that rivals and maybe even exceeds that of NYC in restaurant choices, it is definitely necessary to be on the cutting edge of both ambiance and quality of food. If you are in the 7th, you definitely need try this restaurant, you will not be disappointed!

We ate dinner here tonight and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The proprietress is welcoming and sunny, singing along to the music playing in the background. She is very accommodating to Americans, providing a prix fixe menu in English for 20 euros and patiently explaining menu items. My wife and I had the vegetable soup for appetizer, which was outstanding. My daughter had the salad with pignon(pine nuts) and said she could eat another. We had the chicken fillet, the scallops and the salmon fillet. All were excellent. The chocolate cake dessert and the apple pie(more of a tart) were also lovely. The atmosphere was quaint – a comfortable neighborhood place with just the Parisian ambiance we were looking for.
