A strange, colorful island of treasures that spills out onto the street, L’ille aux Merveilles is an antique shop where time stops and your eyes wonder from one eccentric object to another. I stopped in here nonchalantly one evening while walking towards a friends place, and wound up walking out with my first original artwork purchase: a gorgeous goache study done by a Congolese student of Beaux Art in the 1960s. The provenance definitely adds to the value, but it wasn’t the selling point for me. As soon as I spotted it I couldn’t take my eyes off of it and pictured it immediately on my walls. At 200E it was a real steal. Definitely head to this wonderful cabinet de curiosites if you’re looking to spruce up your décor, the owner has a fascinating story behind each and ever treasure.
