Lion Père et Fils

This is not a convenience store, it’s a specialty store that affords you some really nice French products without breaking your wallet, and with a delightful charming and welcoming service that will make you happy you came. Get out at the abbesses metro and make your first left. It’ll be on your right on a corner. The owners English is slow, but he goes OUT of his way to walk you through the honeys, olive oils, olives, caramels that will fill your take home basket with regional treats. A Unilocal!favorite for a reason!

De l’extérieur, un fleuriste, mais à regarder de plus près, c’est une épicerie fine, qui propose des plantes et herbes aromatiques sur le trottoir, et dans les rayons, des spécialités ou plutôt des originalités. Des fifines sucre d’orge, des bandes de guimauves, des calissons carrés, des tablettes de chocolats à l’ancienne (j’ai tellement rêvassé que j’en ai oublié le nom), des kits de préparation pour gâteau comme le gâteau d’amour de peau d’âné, ou le gâteau des douceurs à la rose, des bâtons de réglisse, des fruits confits dans d’énormes bocaux de verre, des confitures, des pâtes alimentaire de toutes les formes et de toutes les couleurs, des bols avec dessins comme dans les films des années 40, c’est pas un bol, ça, c’est une soupière, la très rare cafetière de la mémé en émail, et par dessus tout cela un parfum d’épices à vous faire oublier que le vendeur vous observe avec patience… Oui, voilà, mon choix est fait je veux le kit pour faire le gâteau d’amour de peau d’âné, s’il vous plait, monsieur. Vous lirez bien la recette madame! Pas la peine c’est juste pour le secret de peau d’âné, le gâteau je vais le rater à coup sur !!! Merci monsieur le marchand de rêves d’enfances parfumés.

Cette boutique est toujours très sympathique à visiter car on y trouve un peu de tout allant du pratique au gourmand.
Du petit sac de graines à planter dans un pot sur son balcon, aux bols en grosse porcelaine de couleur flashy à petits pois, en passant par des petits sablés, des huiles d’olive, des thés…
Une boutique charmante qui vaut bien le coup d’y entrer.

Voilà un endroit où vous trouverez des produits authentiques! depuis 1895, cette épicerie située au cœur du quartier de Montmartre à deux pas du métro abbesses propose des produits de terroirs et de qualité. On trouve une quantité impressionnante d’huiles. Pour vous aider à choisir, une dégustation est possible. Mais également des vinaigres artisanaux, des moutardes avec des mélanges improbables.
Etant moi-​même une grande consommatrice de moutarde, j’ai testé la moutarde cerise et vinaigre balsamique à laquelle je suis désormais accro! Vous trouverez également des infusions, des soupes, des chocolats, des kits (sorte de sachet ou les ingrédients sont réunis pour faire une soupe aux lentilles, coco, curry ou encore une polenta aux cèpes et aux noisettes). C’est une véritable épicerie fine qui fera tomber plus d’un palais!

Now that I live in Paris, I have a lot of anxiety when I fly back to the U.S. It seems that, once you live in a place in turns overly romanticized and yet also vilified by Americans, they all want you to bring a piece back to them.
Problem #1: Paris is NOT flashing plastic Eiffel Towers or gaudy polyester scarves or cheesy berets.
One of the most succinct ways to represent Paris (to me at least) is the FOOD.
Problem #2: Unfortunately, customs doesn’t allow me to bring the most fabulous foods (I’m talking about YOU stinky cheese, foie gras and duck confit!) back to the U.S.
Fortunately, I have found the solution to BOTH Problem #1 AND Problem #2:
Ets Lion (aka Lion Père et Fils, Établissements Lion) to the rescue!
This cute shop, located a stone’s throw from the Abesses Metro station, is amazingly NOT TOURISTY in a touristy area (down the hill from Sacré-​Coeur). From the street it appears to be a garden shop, but inside lies fabulous artisanal edibles from every region in France:
Salted caramels
Spices by the gram
Fleur de sel — both plain and flavored with herbs and/​or spices
Plain and flavored mustards and honeys
Jams in pretty jars and fascinating flavors
Jewel-​like dried fruit
Luscious olive oils
More flavors of vinegar than I ever thought possible
Individual servings of pain de épice
Buttery cookies
Delicate licorice and violet candies
Etc., etc. ETC.
All of these gifts are allowed by U.S. customs!* Yay!
There is also a very small selection of gardening supplies that are perfect for an apartment dweller like myself — window boxes, small wood-​handled pruning shears, seed packets, watering cans — all managing to be somewhat rustic without being that cheesy version of French country so often found in tourist shops.
The friendly proprietor spoke some English and was very happy to help me select the perfect gift or allow me browse on my own to my heart’s content. He even beautifully wrapped one of my gifts gratis and gave me a little licorice candy as we were exchanging goodbyes.
All in all a fantastic place to buy gifts for family and friends AS WELL as a little something for myself!
(I knocked off one star because is it a tad pricey — just remember that it’s more of a gift store than a food store)
