Mercure Paris Lafayette

Here is the good news: The hotel is located in an interesting area. If you want to see the real Paris, it’s a great area: busy, walking distance to a number of shops and restaurants. We took the Big B shuttle to hop on and off tourist attractions. The staff was very nice and everyone spoke English. WiFi was free.
And here is why I gave it a 2 rating: I’ve never stayed in a Mercure before and based on this hotel, it’s not likely I will choose one again. Now for the hotel itself: It’s a step up from a hostel. We were only in Paris 2 nights, so we didn’t change hotels, but here’s the scoop. The room was smaller than our bedroom at home (and our bedroom is not that big). It was actually the smallest hotel room I’ve ever seen. In fact it was about the size of the room I stayed once in a convent. There was a large queen size bed and my husband and I had to move out of each others way to get around it.
When we checked in, both my husband and i heard the desk clerk say that breakfast was free. So we ate breakfast at the hotel the first day. It was definitely only a step up from a hostel, in fact I don’t think it was a step up from a hostel that serves food. It was like a kitchen where everyone got up and got their own food and was laid out like an office kitchen not anything close to a restaurant. The second day we checked out before breakfast and we were told that the mediocre breakfast was $ 17 EUR each. Needless to say, we did not have breakfast there.
And here is the clincher: The bathroom was situated eye level with the head of the bed so when someone walked in the bathroom you could not only see them walk in… YOU COULD SEE LiTERALLY THEM IN THE BATHROOM DOING THEIR BUSINESS. The bathroom door was a frosted sliding glass door. (see the picture) I’ve heard the French aren’t necessarily into privacy, but seriously?
