A pretty standard European hotel that’s relatively inexpensive yet still near the major Paris attractions. I really enjoyed my stay at Pavillon Bastille. If you’re American and used to American hotels, you’re going to have to get used to some European sensibilities. For example, the rooms are small and the television only picks up French speaking channels. The bathroom is also really small, with a sliding door no less, and no shower curtain, just a half pane of vertical glass with one of those handheld shower heads. The continental breakfast is not complimentary — my girlfriend and I made that mistake and ate there three morning at 12 euros apiece. I’d recommend skipping it and going to a small bakery for much better food at the fraction of the cost. You’re about a twenty minute walk from Notre Dame, but you’re also right by the metro so getting around the city is easy. Overall, except for the breakfast debacle, Pavillion Bastille isn’t a bad place to stay for the price and location.

Nice place. Great location, somewhat expensive but par for the course for Paris, friendly staff, nice décor, decent room, good breakfast. Free wifi, and I appreciated that they also have a computer and printer for guest use, which came in handy for printing out concert tickets and airplane boarding passes.

Maybe more like 3.5… OK price, good location in Bastille, very close to the Metro, clean and bright rooms, although a bit small(not much space to put your luggage somewhere unless you block the window), odd shower design(just a small glass door that swings out, only encloses half of the shower, and allows water to drip out or spray out of the shower). As mentioned in another review, there is a heated towel rack, which is nice for both heating towels and drying laundry, although it didn’t heat up predictably. Sometimes it would sit cold for hours; other times it would heat up nicely. Breakfast at the hotel costs 12 euro/day, although if you buy it online you can get it for 10 instead. Breakfast consisted of cereals, breads, jams, honey, nutella, madeleines, croissants, pain au chocolat, boiled eggs, yogurt, fresh fruit, cheeses, meats, coffee, orange juice, grapefruit juice. Rooms cost roughly 200 euro per night, but there’s also a 3-night special which brings the price down roughly by half. Front desk personnel have pretty good English and are friendly. Careful when booking online – we made a mistake of booking two rooms instead of one because the English website says«your choice» when it means«how many rooms do you want». Free wi-fi throughout the hotel. I would recommend this hotel as a nice, clean, affordable hotel in a good location.(I have the impression that most Paris hotels are pretty expensive, and this one is considered affordable by Paris standards.)

Since I believe that Unilocal is new(ish) to France, I thought that I would review the Hotel Pavillion Bastille. I stayed there for a couple of days in May, 2009 while on a business trip. My colleague recommended this hotel to me. He’s stayed in it before and is wonderful at finding affordable places to stay that have a little personality(or at least aren’t some large, predictable chain). I had relatively easy, efficient communication with the hotel via email prior to my arrival when booking my stay and got the room at a good rate. There are a couple hotels on this little stretch of Rue de Lyon that are quite similar(small, boutique, and one has a name that’s very similar to this one). It’s a clean, pleasant place on the outside. The lobby is small, but clean, organized, and cheerful. When I arrived, I was a bit early and my room wasn’t ready yet. The woman behind the desk took my suitcase and let me know when I could come back. And she helped me with some directions so I could run an errand or two in the meantime. When I came back, it was ready. My room was small(I didn’t expect it not to be; it’s France), but nicely appointed. There was plenty of room for me(and a guest one night when a friend came to visit) during what little time we spent in the room. There was a closet with a good amount of space, desk with chair(Unfortunately wifi isn’t free), chair, and a nicely comfy bed. There is a minibar, something I don’t normally care about. However, I did find an affordable half bottle of wine in there when the rain sent me back earlier than expected one evening after dinner. The room had central air(and heat, I suppose, but it was summer when I was there). The bathroom wasn’t massive, but was again, what I expected. There was actually a bathtub(which isn’t always the case; I had some of the aforementioned wine while taking a bath that rainy night). And I appreciated the heated towel rack. There was a nice, little view out into the hotel courtyard at the front(facing Rue de Lyon). The staff during the day was immensely helpful. They helped me find somewhere to buy a new mobile SIM card(and even helped me later top it up with my credit card since the directions/prompts were in French) and were generally great with any questions I had. The front door is locked at night, but someone is always sitting at the desk to let guests in. You can’t beat the location of the hotel for the price, I think. It’s right across from the stage door of the Bastille, steps from the Metro, a few more steps to the Marais, and walking distance to so much, really. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to my friends as well(Actually, I’ve already done so).

If you want to stay by the Bastille/Gare de Lyon, I recommend this hotel. It’s bright and cheery with clean rooms and a very friendly staff. Also, the bathroom is more spacious than than most Parisian hotel bathrooms, although my mother begs to differ. At least the door in this one doesn’t open directly onto the toilet and sink. I used to live down the street from this hotel and I checked out about 20 mid-range hotels around Gare de Lyon to find something suitable for visiting friends and family. Le Pavillon Bastille is the only one I recommend. The location is great because it borders the 11th and 12th arrondissements, within walking distance of le Marais, major sites such as Notre Dame and le Louvre, bars(rue de Lappe), and a bustling street market(Place d’Aligre). And since it’s not in a major tourist district like the 16th or 5th, it’s more affordable. On Sundays, when everything else in Paris is closed, you can easily walk to le Viaduct des Arts or le Marais for some shopping/dining.
