Rue Mouffetard

We visited this area of Paris on several nights while out exploring. It was a short walk from our hotel but well worth the walk up.
While walking the street during the day, you can purchase any type of food imaginable… from prepared food to grocery items… meats, cheeses, olives, sandwiches, crepes, etc. The place is just humming with activity.
At night, the market gives way to restaurants and bars… from university students to tourists to locals dining out, the place was packed every time we explored the area.
We had several good meals (one was an authentic Greek Food restaurant whose name has totally slipped my mind) and met several locals out dining.
A great place to eat (at a reasonable price) and people watch.

A major thoroughfare since Roman times, when it linked Lutetia (Paris) and Rome, this street is one of the oldest in the city. In the 17^th and 18^th centuries it was known as the Grande rue du Faubourg St-​Marcel, and many of its buildings date from that time. Some of the small shops still have ancient painted signs, and some houses have mansard roofs. No. 125 has an attractive, restored Louis XIII façade, and the entire front of No. 134 has beautiful decoration of wild beasts, flowers, and plants. At No. 60, the Fontaine de Pot-​de-​Fer is a small fountain dating from Roman times. Later on it was connected to an aqueduct used by Marie de Médicis to take water to the Palais du Luxembourg and its gardens.
The area is known for its open-​air markets, especially those in Place Maubert, Place Monge, and Rue Daubenton, a side street where a lively African market takes place.
At night, the street bustles with people enjoying the Greek, Italian, Argentinian, and other cuisines offered at the many small restaurants.

You have to seek out this narrow windy cobbled road with a bunch of great places for food. Every few days, there is a fresh market at one end, next to the church. Looks like a movie set, and the smells from the fromageries, ooh la la!

Die Rue Descartes, der südliche Teil der Straße geht in die Rue Mouffetard über, ist 3 Minuten von unserem Hotel in der Rue Cujas entfernt.

Hier befindet sich sozusagen unser Ess– und Wohnzimmer. Diese Straße im Quartier Latin bietet eine große Auswahl an Restaurants, Bars und Cafes.
Trotzdem ist sie bei weitem kein so großer Touristenmagnet wie z.B. das Quartier St. Severin und man kann hier wirklich gut und günstig essen, (manchmal stehen hier auch ein paar Koberer vor der Tür, aber das hält sich sehr in Grenzen).

Unser Lieblingsrestaurant ist das Tire Bouchon
aber auch viele andere haben wir getestet, es hat sich meistens gelohnt und ist auf jeden Fall einen Versuch wert.

An einem lauen Sommerabend, mit einem Apéritif in einer der Bars sitzen und Leute beobachten, macht in dieser noch nicht von Touristen überlaufenden Gegend, besonders viel Spaß.

Selbst einer der seltenen Regentage während unseres Urlaubs, zaubert eine ganz reizvolle Stimmung hervor.

Une des plus vieilles rues de Paris.
