I want to cry about the wifi situation here. It took me about 15 minutes to connect to and I had to reconnect every 20 minutes or so. Not a great ppace to study if you need wifi :(

Lazy: This morning they decided not to open up when they were supposed to… overslept? Slow: Two men at morning rush hour? Neither knew how to work register, nobody cleaning tables, line out the door. They would be fired in any US store. Quality: Get you pasteries somewhere else. dreadful quality. Mr Schultz should be concerned.

Let them drink lattes! Or so Marie Antoinette allegedly said at Starbucks Bastille… As an American in Paris, what struck me as the most unusual, ungodly and flat out foreign behavior of the French was the fact that many shops were shut on a Sunday. Do people still spend time with family on this day? Shocking, I know so imagine our relief when finding that fine outpost of Anglo-Saxon capitalism, an open Starbucks, while wandering the nearby streets. And relief was forthcoming in the form of a bathroom break. My attempt at asking for the numeric code, en Francais, actually worked. There was one minor detail I couldn’t quite process, mainly the clerk’s response of the numbers in French in a rapid fire assuming I’m a native speaker tempo. He probably thought I was slightly slow when I then said«Ecrivez s’il vous plait» and switched to perfect English. Much like McDonald’s customizing its menu to meet local tastes, so does Starbucks. I spotted a croque madame sandwich to go along with various waffles. For that reason alone it’s worth stopping into a seemingly familiar shop, ubiquitous in the US and see how they handle the local markets. If I were an MBA student I’d take notes. I didn’t attempt to use the free wi-fi but many were, lounging about and socializing with friends. For an open bathroom on a Sunday and a cup of the familiar far from home, Starbucks Bastille is worth storming. I just wonder if they have any special promotion on July 14th.

Un Starbucks est un starbucks. Certes.
