Having not visited Val d’Isere before I was keen to find some decent nightlife that wasn’t too cheesy but was good fun and not too expensive. After a week on the slopes and a relatively subdued few days my friends and I had a few options that had been recommended to us. We opted for Le Graal and an interesting night was had all round. On entering the club I was a little wary and did have a moment of terror as I felt I was about to take part in a remake of Hostel. This was due to the fact that it appeared no one was in the club, there was no sound and as we were ushered through we wondered if we weren’t just being lured in to some alpine nightmare. This was further compounded as we came across the cloakroom from which it was possible to buy some interesting looking sex toys as you placed your coat behind the desk. Once we made it into the actual club we realised that it all looked quite tame, perhaps a little too much for our taste. The décor was fresh and new with a funky Saturday Night Fever style dance floor, always a bonus. Drinks prices were reasonable, for the resort anyway, only for the fact that Sterling is so weak meant that everything seemed much more expensive when you’re matching pounds per euro. The music was hit and miss. I was amused by the line up of Hed Kandi CD’s in the DJ booth and wasn’t surprised to hear mainly funky house although towards the end of the night it turned into a French wannabe gangster white paradise followed by some strange alpine madness. I was bemused but entertained none the less. The crowd was mixed, mainly French and varying ages. There was no attitude and everyone was friendly enough, even toward the scousers who we had picked up along the way and were in high jinx all night. One even whipped off his top whilst wearing my friend’s bra in order to get a free t-shirt although I just asked for one so I feel he was definitely taken advantage of. It isn’t the kind of club I’d visit in the UK but for the purpose of the holiday it was above average. just beware of the wandering Frenchmen’s hands!
