Maître Bernard Antony is an institution almost like the living national treasures in Japan. He IS the world’s most renowned Fromager Affineur in his little shop in southern Alsace ca 20 minutes drive by car from Basel(CH), opened 1982. He buys young top quality cheese, about 150 artisanal produced kinds from raw milk, mainly from France. He stores them in his vast cellars until their perfect maturity. Only then he sells them in the shop or in a small restaurant, called Sundgauaer Kaes-Kaller. I once rented a bus and went with 25 people there to enjoy his special cheese menu«Cérémonie de Fromage», a six course meal, with a variety of cheese on each plate(totalling over 22 cheese varieties you will be able to taste), and served with the wines perfectly matching. Be warned, his menu consists almost only of cheese. You’ll get bread and potatoes, but don’t expect a traditional mix with other items like meat or salad. It’s all about Cheese. He joins the guests and talks either about the products(both wine or cheese) or about one of his many adventures. He usually delivers cheese to the presidential inauguration in Matignon(Paris), the White House, many Five Star Chefs, Châteaux and numerous high profile families from politics or society. His fame goes around the globe, photos on the wall are there to prove it. I speak French with him but really love to hear him talk Alsässer Diitsch… Useless to say if you are not into cheese, there is nothing more there… but if you are, it is the place to find mature cheese of the highest quality. To me, living in Switzerland, the prices are modest, particularly when I consider the TOP quality of the products. Maître Anthony is a very friendly old chap, and luckily for us his son Jean François has decided to follow his father. We only can hope he becomes as professional as his father! For any gastro interested tourist this is a MUST!

Maître Antony und sein Sohn verkaufen hier hervorragenden Käse, den sie selbst veredelt haben. Sehr zu empfehlen ist eine Käseverkostung, die aus zig Sorten Käse und auf Wunsch den dazu passenden Weinen mit zusätzlichen Erläuterungen besteht. Ein genuß– und lehrreicher Abend.
