Got a great recommendation from a local when I was travelling through… Great café with fresh pies and baked treats as well as a fresh deli counter with some amazing looking salads and fresh fillings; they also have a hot counter open over lunch hours where you can get a full roast style dinner, soup, chips, etc. Ordered from the specials menu, a cajun chicken ciabatta with side salad. Was a great choice, hot chicken and was flavoured great plus also really enjoyed the side salad. Coffee, meh, not great(sorry) well usual café quality just not of the fine barista joints I’ve come to love in Dublin. Although still a perfect place to grab a basic americano or a pot of tea :-) Spacious café, plenty of seating and the staff were super friendly. Next time I’m in town, I know where to go!

Daughter and I visited this small city between Galway and Dublin, and had a delicious lunch here. In fact, it was the best food we had in the entire 2 weeks of visiting Ireland. I’ll admit, we didn’t eat in any high-end restaurants during this trip… mostly pubs and small cafeterias. The interior is modern, light, and it looked as though locals are their main customers. My daughter’s slice of Quiche was huge AND it came with 3 side salads. More than she could finish for 6.95 euros. I had chicken Kiev with 3 sides of vegetables. The most moist & succulent meat ever, and the carrots, cauliflower, roasted potatoes were nicely seasoned and huge portions for about 8 euros. Although already stuffed, we forced ourselves to try one of the decedent meringue deserts which was almost too pretty to eat. If visiting Athlone, you owe it to yourself to pop in… even if its only for afternoon tea.
