We were here on 12⁄31 and it was dead and we practically had the Castle to ourselves. The employee working the register was very friendly and helpful. This is one of the best restored castles we’ve seen on our ireland trip and it was rather interactive and would be good for kids.

This old lady of a castle sits quietly at the centre of Athlone town on the banks of the river Shannon. I’m told it’s medieval, but looks much newer. The mud and wattle original is not to be seen, you see the grey masonry of what appears to be a more modern(like 17th century) castle. But then I’m not an expert, so what do I know? Worth a visit to get a birds eye view of Athlone and the Shannon. There’s also some interesting historical stuff in there. And of course the buildings making up the various parts of the Castle themselves are worth checking out.
