The food might earn four stars but the service two stars at best. We arrived on a Saturday evening without a reservation – we walked down the road from our B&B. It’s a tiny village and we thought there would be no problem. They gave us a room in the back in the«overflow room» because every table was booked at 8 pm. We sat there for two hours looking at two beautiful tables with views that stayed empty the entire time we were there. Very frustrating. The food was very good but getting service was very difficult. Two of the servers were either new or completely clueless. There was one very good young woman, an art student from the US with EU citizenship, and she was quite good and helped us out at the end. If a restaurant will seat you at a table, they should take care of you. They certainly took our money as if we were in the front room. We should have been treated just the same.

Absolutely gorgeous restaurant just 2 kms from the village of Ballyvaughan in Co Clare — on the Burren, and on the main coast road to Fanore. But be careful as you could easily pass it by — there is a signpost on the side of the road and restaurant itself just looks like a large modern dormer style house. It is a surprisingly contemporary restaurant on the inside, very bright and warm, but truly elegant and comfortable — in fact it gives you a good feeling to dine here, especially with the stunning location offering spectacular views of Galway Bay and surrounding the natural Burren landscape. In fact there is a panoramic view over the Bay from most tables. A large group of us dined here last week and we had pre-booked the early bird for our party, however, there was no problem for those who chose a la carte menu instead. Service was excellent with delightful friendly local staff and even the owner, Maureen, was waiting on tables herself and making sure all her guests were happy and satisfied. The food was absolutely delicious, with fresh fish and other locally sourced products being a speciality. The early bird menu was really good value at € 25 per head and the only small gripe I had was that there wasn’t much of a choice on this menu — but maybe it was a good thing as it easier to make up a persons mind rather than milling over the extensive a la carte menu which, as expected, was rather more expensive! If you happen to be in the Burren, make sure you book a meal at An Fulacht Fia and you will not be disappointed.

An exceptional restaurant just outside Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare along the coast road by The Burren, An Fulacht Fia caters for the discerning guests that enjoy that special night out when on holiday. And that you will get here beyond doubt. With fabulous views across the Galway Bay, the service and food quality are of excellence, if you are willing to spend that bit extra. Homemade breads were provided with what seemed like locally filtered water, as it was soft and fresh tasting. Starters range from € 7.95 to € 11.95 with soup at € 5.50, with Scallops, Mussels, Oak Salmon, Seafood Chowder and the one I chose, port soaked pear with Stilton and rocket, absolutely delicious. Seafood is a speciality in this region of course and also features in the mains of Halibut, Cod & Salmon alongside Lamb, Beef, Veal & Duck dishes ranging from € 18.15 to € 28.50. The vegetarian Goats Cheese & Stuffed Pepper at € 17.50, the seafood platter special that was on was to die for at just € 23.00. The dish had crab claws, prawns, monk-fish, scallops and a heap of mussels in garlic sauces. My wife’s halibut was cooked to perfection, along with selection of fresh vegetables and a good wine, the setting was just terrific. With a generous homemade apple crumble slice to share along with coffee, we sat back to enjoy the sunset over the bay. The bill just at € 87, we totally recommend your special dining evening here.
