Banteer is a very small village about 53 km northwest of Cork City. In what used to be an old schoolhouse, the Glen Theatre is run as a labour of love by people who live in the community, & plays host to both amateur & professional theatre, comedy, music & poetry, in a wide programme of events throughout the year. It is quite honestly one of the nicest & friendliest venues I’ve ever known. One of the great number of things I love about Ireland is the passion for live entertainment, from drama to sport, they’re not that far away in their ability to inspire enthusiasm, and it’s not just a monied class pastime, there’s a need for it across the board. Amateur theatre has a serious reputation here, no poor man to the pro’s! This has seating for just over 120, and has recently had well known comedians like Pat Shortt, and top musicians like Brian Kennedy & Sharon Shannon appearing. But it was the welcome in the bar after the show from everyone which is one of the warmest I’ve ever experienced! I was in a small group doing a show for one night here, and it was rapturous applause, and the consensus was rammed home that they genuinely loved what we were doing. No greater compliment. No kidding, we were made to feel like superstars! So you see for me this felt like a 5 star venue, I felt as happy as if I’d played at The Abbey or the Gate, and no greater welcome you get than here, Thanks to Tadgh O Keeffe & all the boys who looked after us so generously afterwards. You fellas were the real stars!
