You know those cavemen that cartoon scientists are so fond of resucitating? I reckon they’d really appreciate a place like Gino’s. Like a mammoth who lost a race with a glacier, Gino’s just sits there, year after year, never changing. It was the place where my parents trusted me to eat in public. Over twenty years later, nothing has changed. The menu, layout, interior, staff uniforms, everything is as it was the first time I came here. Gino’s offers pizza and gelato. While I can take or leave their pizzas; I’ll always have a fond spot for their desserts. The gelato counter is just tucked just inside the door. On a hot summer day, it’s great to stop in, grab a scoop and head off down Oliver Plunkett Street towards the Peace Park. Sure, my Ginos experience is heavily flavoured with nostalgia, but I’m sure new visitors will appreciate too.

Stumbled onto Gino’s after catching a movie at the Gate Multiplex nearby. Although it looks strictly like a takeaway joint from the street, it’s got plenty of seating in the back of the restaurant. The pizzas are good and cheap. A small is 5.75 € base, and it’ s plenty to fill up an average-sized appetite. The desserts also really shine — the«death by chocolate» seemed to be ordered by 90% in attendance, and the mint chocolate chip shake was pretty amazing. I definitely walked away more full than I intended.

I actually have a fondness for this place. It could be doing with a bit of a revamp though.

I have been a fan of Gino’s for several years. They do a great Lunch offer with Pizza, Coffee(or a soft drink) and Ice Cream for about € 10 — That’s GREAT value in my book. The Pizza is a really good thin base, with good quality(and choice) of toppings. Coffee is also good and the Ice Creams are home-made and the Death by Chocolate is a must. Be warned though– you need to be very hungry to finish the Death by Chocolate after a Pizza.

Nice ice-cream, but skip the pizza. Dominos does better than the under-cooked, over-topped stuff you get in here. Great for a take-out ice-cream though: you can get a fairly big tub of anything for less than € 1.50! Make sure to ask for a «half-scoop» of any two ice-creams, they’ll usually give you a bit of each.

Back in my student days, far too long ago now, we couldn’t afford much more than a potato and two turnips to rub together for dinner. But if it was someone’s birthday, or a special occasion, we’d all save up and hit Gino’s hard for possibly the best pizza in Cork city, a couple of drinks and — of course! — some of their exceptional icecream for dessert. Family and student friendly, slap-bang in the middle of the city centre, Gino’s is the place for a cheap and cheerful feed of truly excellent pizza, with a vibrant atmosphere to match its trendy up-to-date menus. True, there were no parma ham, goat’s cheese and rocket or chorizo sausage and chilli Edam pizzas back in my day, but their new twists are just as dependable as their old classics, at a fraction of the price you’d pay at some other trendy pizzerias. Old school, but still cool.
