Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre

I have only ever toured the grounds for long walks but such a great little treat on a weekend! Big open fields surrounded with history. There are well maintained gardens that will look even better in the summer.
This place has a great little coffee shop to stop off in halfway through you trek. The grounds are very animal friendly– and the coffee shop will even supply you with a bowl of water for the dogs. They do exhibitions in the summer which are supposedly great!

On a recent drive to Dundalk, we decided to drive out to Oldbridge, the site of the historic Battle of the Boyne.
The imposing Oldbridge House has been renovated and turned into an interpretive centre. There are some displays inside the house of 17^th century weaponry, a 3 –D model of the site, which gives a great overview of the battle, famous paintings of the battle and an interesting and informative documentary on the Battle of the Boyne itself.
There is a beautiful spacious café overlooking the old walled garden which is in the process of being rennovated .
the highlight for me was the guided walk down to the site of Oldbridge Village and also the Cavalry & Dragoon Demonstration. As we watched the horse riders in 17^th Cen uniform riding up towards Oldbridge House, it was amazing to think that we were standing on the spot where one of the greatest and most important battles in Europe had taken place over 300 years ago.
There are some very nice walks along the River Boyne and also lovely picnic areas.
There are living history events every Sunday from June-​Sept.
This is really an enjoyable visit and best appreciated by anyone who likes History (Irish, European or Military). Children will really enjoy the living history displays outside. This attraction is not that long opened and certainly has a lot more potential to attract more visitors.
The tea and apple pie test: Very disappointed with their applepie. Soggy pastry. Avoid at all costs. 2 teas and 2 pies cost € 12.50. Verdict: Bring your own picnic ;-)
