I had a package shipped to me from Istanbul. According to the tracking information it was received at my local DHL depot in Ireland within 24 hours(last Wednesday). Thursday it showed«with delivery courier» though no delivery was attempted. Friday, the same. Saturday and Sunday, no notation. Monday, the same, plus it shows as having been signed for by someone else I don’t know. Someone was home every day. I called the customer service, who said the delivery driver couldn’t find my house because it was rural. I live in a housing estate in a town and my street is on GPS. Then they took my phone number and said I would get a call from the driver and would receive my package within an hour. No call, no package more than an hour later. The multinational corporation I used to work for in Texas fired DHL because they couldn’t be trusted to deliver packages. I have been burned by DHL many times, including a release-date book delivery that they lied about. I’m sorry to see the same ineptitude perpetuating itself here in Ireland. EDIT: I got two calls today, one from a customer service person at DHL, and another from someone who said he was a manager of the delivery driver. Both promised me that my package would arrive today, even if it took until 6:00. It is now 7:30 and I have received no package. Their website still shows that my package was signed for by some stranger. Their customer service phones are turned off for the night(maybe that’s why they told me to wait until 6:00?). I am just completely fed up.

Ah… it’s nice that when the US Federal Government sets an April 15th deadline to give them money, they are kind enough to «suggest» that those of us living abroad use an «approved» signature-based delivery service like DHL. It’s a little tough to find, but the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and did a great job of double checking the address for me and confirming that they were an approved service for US income tax returns. According to the fellow at the desk, they do see an influx of us Amurrican expats at this time of year so they’re used to getting the question«Now, you’re SURE this will get there??». Bottom Line-at least this year I don’t have to write«Haliburton» on the Payee line…
