What a gas place Hartigan’s is… I’d been here once before about 18 years ago and the place remains unchanged since. Actually I’d say it’s been the same since it’s inception, whenever that may have been. How about that floor, eh? Go in for a look and I think you’ll agree. Barman was extremely quiet, which was grand. The whole place was quiet due to it being empty. It was a Tuesday. I had a nice pint of Guinness. We chatted and worked our way trough two packets of scampi fries over two drinks. The facilities are very dated, as you can imagine. But clean. I believe it gets quite busy near the end of the week after work, so it does liven up. Definitely worth a look.

Average sort of pub — not too bad but nothing special. Tiny toilets, a smoking area like a concrete prison yard, a general air of shabby neglect about the place. I paid a recent visit here after an absence of several years and found little has changed or improved in the meantime. If your looking for a pub with character there are better ones to be found within a five minutes walk.

In the States we would call this a dive bar, but it was great. It was right by the HIlton we were staying at, and we have to say the Guinness here was the best of anywhere we went our entire time in Dublin. I don’t know what the bartender did, but it tasted better than anywhere else. There are a whole bunch of rugby pictures on the wall and a few guys sitting around reading the betting papers. We totally did not fit in but the bartender was friendly and kept the Guinness flowing.

Just about as old school as it gets! If you are looking for one of Dublin’s bright, modern café bars then keep on walking but if you want an authentic piece of Dublin life then this is the place to stop for a drink.

I felt like i was in the changing room of a GAA club. Frayed lino tiles. Off canary yellow paint. «A beer garden» which consists of cement and silver chairs and tables. But I fell in love with the place. The Guinness is amazing, the bartender used a butter knife to make sure the head was perfect. It mainly was men in there, very wealthy looking men. Then came the more artistic looking crowd later in the evening. The long seat at in the bar area is a great spot as is the table as you catch all the sun from the large window. It’s great to have non generic pubs in the city that are just so unique for being themselves.

When I lived in Dublin, Hartigans was across the street from my flat. Mom and her son(Enda) ran the place at that point(2002) and from reading the reviews it seems like that’s still the case. Nice to know some things never change. I would have starved if not for ma. On my third night of eating cup-o noodles I stumbled into Hartigans for a pint and asked if Dublin had grocery stores. They had no idea what I was talking about. I said, you know, places with food that you can buy to cook. And ma replied. we call those supermarkets and then she drew me a map on a napkin to the nearest one. Thanks Hartigan’s for the great memories.

When I think of Hartigans the first thing that springs to mind is character. Hartigans is unashamedly scruffy and familiar. It’s family-run, which is pretty unusual in Dublin in my experience. They do make a great pint of Guiness, which leads me to believe that maybe good bartending skills run in the family? Like Laura pointed out, ‘mixed’ is an understatement when it comes to describing the clientele but at the same time, you’ll most likely find someone you’ll have something in common with and never feel like an outsider. Welcoming, friendly, eclectic and scruffy– that’s Hartigan’s.

Hartigan’s is an institution. It’s an absolute kip but this is part of the reason that it’s so popular. It hasn’t changed in donkey’s years and Alfie & Ma Mulligan still run the bar along with their son. It needs new stools, it needs a paint job, it needs a lot. But if you changed it, it would loose the lovely pub-smell(lovely?) and it just wouldn’t look so weathered. Supposedly one of the best pints of Guinness in Dublin here too. It’s the sort of place they would leave the bottle of red lemonade on the counter for your shandy. It’s got charm and old-school appeal. Everyone loves it — don’t ever change!

This is a funny little place. Hit or miss doesn’t quite cover it. It’s got a reputation for having one of the best pints of Guinness in town, and yet it can be deathly quiet or ridiculously busy. It’s like the anti-Leeson St. pub… scruffy as hell, they’ll serve pretty much anyone and the clientele is impossible to predict from one day to another. You get Trinity students quenching their insatiable thirst after volunteering, old men nursing a pint and random Joes with apparently no busines to be there whatsoever. All rubbing shoulders and generally not taking much notice of one another. And all served in what is probably the closest thing to a ‘country’ pub in the city. Not too bad!
