I was very excited to see HMV back in Dundrum. I think that it was really missed when it went. HMV as always have lots of offers to attract your attention going in the door, the staff are friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is always very relaxed. A great place to start the Christmas shopping! :D

I get most of my music and movies on-line now so really don’t have an excuse to wander into HMV any more. …well, I didn’t. that is slowly and inexorably changing as junior grows up and the world of gaming is beginning to make its presence felt. Skylanders is the new obsession and anywhere that stocks them has become a destination for the family, this includes HMV where they have a HUGE selection of gaming related paraphernalia including consoles, discs and characters. The shop is big, airy, bright and inviting with helpful staff; as junior losses himself in the world of Stinkbomb, Spiro and Hoot Loop, I very happily browse the CDs, remembering when I used to do this without a junior in tow!

Great to see this place open again after a brief closure. Dundrum shopping centre lost a huge amount of its appeal when HMV was closed, as a man, where was I meant to browse? Its great to be able to buy CDs and DVDs again. None of this streaming stuff, I want the DVD Box proudly displayed in my home. HMV has a great selection of DVDs, music, and video games. This is a big store too so lots of space to walk around and waste time, and make a few impulse purchases.

Although I can see the merits of getting all your film and music needs online, there is nothing like a properly browsing through actual physical goods and taking them home with you the same day. Immediate gratification, our generation’s curse. This particular store has a huge collection of films and box sets and there always seems to be some sort of a sale on. The music section is less impressive, but there is a nice little book section with an up-to-date selection that is a good option for Christmas present hunting. Prices are from as little as € 4, which is cheaper than a magazine if you want something to read on the Luas journey home.

Whenever I have money that I don’t really have any immediate use for, I generally open a savings account and… pff, couldn’t even get through that. Whenever I have money, and I don’t owe anyone anything, I head straight to HMV to splurge on CD’s, DVD boxsets, video games and books. The Dundrum HMV is a great place to do said splurging. I have bought tonnes of books and tv shows on DVD here, either in HMV or one of the unit’s previous incarnations: Zavvi and Virgin. They have some cool retro T-shirts here and during Sake season, really good DVD offers. Keep an eye out.

OK i can get very critical of music stores. i cant help it but i am in a lot of them so It’s frustrating when you come across one so bad as this… you just have to let it out. This has been a Virgin. then a Xavi… and now its a HMV. And each time they have failed to impress me… HMV has a chance to fix what was wrong with the two earlier incarnations, they could have gotten a better selection and diversified their taste, they could have gotten some staff who know what they are talking about, they could have sorted out the till areas so that sales were processed faster… they could have gotten more staff to cut the length and times of cues… they could have had a good look at what categories certain artists were in(The Streets are NOT dance music). They could have gotten rid of the hugely tacky and quirky book section that lacks any good quality music books/biographies at prices that are in anyway cheaper than buying them in a good bookshop… Im being a little harsh. because i am sure you will find the CD or DVD you are looking for, and they will of course order it in for you. Its just frustrating when a company like HMV who are supposed to be rated highly in the music store business fail to have their sections properly alphabetised and well looked after… the only two cds i’ve ever bought from here were in bad condition. The first half of the store is devoted to sale items… which is lovely… but they are the same 50 dvds and cds that have been sale for the last 6months and they just plaster the whole place with them giving the illusion of abundance when in fact you find your self skimming through the selection mumbling frustratingly to yourself«seen it… seen it… heard it… seen it… seen it…» etc etc etc I wouldn’t go out of my way to shop here… and will only be entering in the future to get a handy shortcut out to the cinema
