For a fairly ubiquitous coffee chain in Dublin, Insomnia doesn’t feel too corporate and bland. The coffee is tasty and freshly made by professional staff. There are also a nice variety of muffins and pastries that are good, though not amazing. It’s not a terrible place to hang out and get some work done, but not as inviting as some other independent coffee shops. Good option for a quick cup of coffee in the morning.

I have found myself in insomnia much more frequently recently and it could be that the location across from the National Gallery is rather convenient but I also find it good to mix up where i get my weekend coffee fix as well(variety is good). I have found that their 3.75 special for a cappuccino and any muffin/scone/banana bread, etc. is handy for a quick ready-to-get-my-weekend started combo. The service is a little hit and miss though. I have received service which was seemingly happy and made me feel welcome once, but most often it is moreso seeming to just want to take my order, deliver my coffee and move on. Service with a smile at least could improve the ratings a bit. I have also found that at times the cappuccino is more hot milk than espresso and I am not sure that they always have the mix quite right. 3.75 for hot milk is definitely very pricey.

Insomnia gets good marks in context — meaning when choosing amongst the various coffee chains that are all over Dublin. I prefer Insomnia because I am a flat white fan and Insomnia offers the best in town. Some of the other chains put it on the menu without really knowing what they are — and precious few local places have started to serve flat whites. The big disadvantage at Insomnia is their food offering — especially the lack of decent choices for breakfast(baked goods or hot sandwiches).

Ugggh, not another chain coffee place! Consider this a warning: when there’s a café as stellar as Lincoln’s Inn right next door(and Brewbaker Café across the street) give this tired outlet a pass. Sure, this is an Irish chain, but there’s so much more to be discovered out there on Leinster Street! Offering nothing new and with no unique features besides a good view of an intersection and art museum across the street, Insomnia on Leinster Street offers the usual array of pre-packed sandwiches and fresh soups found as close by as the next Insomnia at the end of Nassau Street, just a few blocks away. It’s tragic that when I stopped by on a week day afternoon, Lincoln’s Inn was a mausoleum and this shop was buzzing — Dublin, can we please get over our love of franchises?!
