I am writing this update because Tamar, who is the Artistic Director for the Robert Chambers, has been in touch about my experiences at Lunatic Fringe. Her message was extremely apologetic and generous in terms of making up for it. I like that they have made an effort to make up for the experiences and I know they can get it right — remember there was one visit that went really really well for me. I have since found another salon that I am happy with, but if for any reason I need to change, I would give Lunatic Fringe another go. Especially when so much effort has been made to make things right. Good customer service will usually win me over.

Going on the basis of previous reviews I made a booking for Tamar in Lunatic Fringe. I wasn’t disappointed. Tamar is very passionate about hair and also very knowledgeable. She spent time talking to me, getting a feel for what I like etc. and then proceeded to undo a particularly poor haircut. I left the salon delighted with my cut and more to the point it is extremely easy to manage. Will I be back … you betcha. Thanks to Unilocal and in turn Tamar I now can face the world with my head high!

Last year, I broke up with my old salon so was in the market for a new place to get my hair cut. As most people know, it’s pretty awkward when you first meet someone new. There’s the normal chitchat about weather, where you’re from, what you’re up to, plans for the weekend. You want to be chatty, but not too chatty and you want to impress. At the same time, you don’t want to lose sight of yourself and be a bit forceful so you can get what you want. Luckily, Lunatic Fringe was a great place to make a new relationship. I saw a few people here and each time had a good experience. Each member of the staff listened to what I needed and then offered their own suggestions. Like any good relationship, it’s all about communication, and at Lunatic Fringe you feel a part of a dialogue, rather than being told what is going on. I can seriously say that I had the best haircut of my life here and now that I’m living somewhere else, tell my new hairdressers(I get around) how I want my hair cut based off of what I learned at Lunatic Fringe. This place is high on my recommendation list and I tell all my friends to go here!

After a couple of years of three-hour ordeals at the hairdressing schools, I decided it was time to give my locks to a professional. I’d heard this was one of the places to go that knew how to deal with curly and wavy hair and I wasn’t let down. I called in for a next-day appointment asking for someone who was good with curly hair. The receptionist booked me with Sheva; when I asked again if she knew how to deal with curly hair the receptionist answered, affronted, «She’s one of our top stylists.» That’s not what I asked, but I didn’t push. Sheva sat me down and listened to my requirements, including things like«holds up under a bike helmet» and«can you get the straightish front parts to go curly.» She had different ideas than I’d come in with re both length and style, but was able to explain them clearly and tell me why my ideas wouldn’t work. I’d always shied away from an A-line cut but she a) told me why it would be great for me using words like«motion» and«face shape» and b) offered a compromise: if I didn’t like it she’d cut off the longer front parts. Her tone offered buckets of savvy and frankness with undertones of understanding. I got some magazines, and she made just a bit of conversation, managing to make me feel not awkward as well– cause where I come from, the hairstylists make conversation! It’s rude to bury your face in mags! Not that I like either way, just sayin’ it’s a different set of expectations to get used to. She used lots of curl-specific techniques, which I have learned as they were being taught to students at the aforementioned hairdressing schools. I never once had a reason to fear. When she sat me under the dryer and started consulting with her next client, she still took the time after it was all done to come back and make 5 – 10 minutes of finishing touches until it was perfect in her eyes and mine. She also gave me styling tips as she was doing up my ‘do. The cut’s fantastic– a week later I’m still discovering great things about it. I’ll definitely go back there again. Monday to Wednesday they offer a 10% student discount, too.

Only lunatics are allowed in, so it suits me just dandy — I jest of course or do I? No I’m completely jesting because I am hilarious with amazing comedic insight. Only reason why I went here was because I was getting a serious cause of mullet-itous and Unilocalers have given the spot a lot of review love — so I booked. The staff are so friendly from the moment you go in till the moment you leave, just genuinely nice. Ruth is the woman. She explained to me what she was doing, why she was doing it whilst I devoured too many trashy magazines. «Ruth this is my favourite part about getting my hair done, reading trash, I never buy these things.» Beautiful trash it was too. The jugs on that Jordan one! And there was something about Jennifer Anniston having a baby coach even though she doesn’t have a baby… What else some couple in England that made me visually wince have been warned by the police to stop being so noisy with the lovemaking, I did wretch a little with that mental image — I know I am a bad person. Visually unappealing people are allowed to have sex too — I must accept that. Thoroughly happy with the hair cut. Very reasonable and I got a 30% discount if I bring a friend or family member… Nicely done. Thank you Dublin Unilocalers for this find :)

Best hair cut I’ve had in years. I’m one of those who is never happy with the hair cut atfer I get it but I have to say Sinead who cut my hair yesterday did a great job. I took one star off cause they did leave me waiting 20 minutes but other than that I would definitely recommend the place.

Haircuts and hairdressers are notoriously hard to match together. I find myself oftentimes really upset, unhappy or downright pissed off coming out of one, because they haven’t done what I asked, or they ignored what I asked. Lunatic Fringe was suggested to me by a friend last year and since then I won’t use anywhere else. They are incredibly friendly and polite as you would expect. The chairs at the sinks have back massagers built in. You get a head massage as they wash you hair(all part of the cut price too). But what really recommends them for me, is that they are up front and honest with you about what you want to have done. During the cut they let you know what they are doing as they go along, so you dont have to ask uncomfortably. They check with you at various points about length and shape. You feel part of the process, something which I have so often been distanced from when getting my hair done. So i’d say if you’re at your wits end with hairdressers give this place a try. Ask for Ella Shiva(amazing name right!!) or Ruth. They have never led me astray!
