Having landed easily one of the smallest wild brown trout to inhabit the fair waters of the Dodder I realised that all 30 grams of it were too much for my trusty fly rod(no, I didn’t weigh it and like all good fishermen I suspect I’m overestimating). The tip broke off my rod and I presumed that was the end of it… no pun intended but I think there’s one there somewhere. Anyway, someone told me to try Mikes Bikes as they have a pretty healthy fishing section as well as being purveyors of all things bicycleeeee. In I went and sure enough the guy behind the counter told me my rod was fixable and for the princely sum of 5 euro he made up a resin and attached a new tip to my rod. Fast, friendly, attentive and not expensive, 5 stars and well deserved!

According to David D. this shop is well known to residents of Dun Laoghaire but it’s new to me! I have to say, this is probably the best bike shop that I’ve visited in a long while. The staff are helpful and don’t appear to be trying to rob anyone blind, which is either a brilliant ruse or a welcome relief, who knows? They stock a great range of bikes and all the regular bike-a-brac like helmets, locks and bells. What pushes them over the edge is a great selection of slightly more specialised stuff. They have a great line up if super-cool BMXs and if, like me, you guiltily wish you had a fixie/hipster bike they have all the essential bits and bobs you’ll need to do it. They are the only bike shop in Dublin, outside of my laptop, that I’ve found who will cater for this most obnoxious of hobbies. They also sell a really large selection of second hand bikes, which is rare, and if I lived a little closer I would definitely use Mikes Bikes as my regular bike shop.

Well known by the locals of Dun Laoghaire, Mikes Bikes have been selling bicycles from their conerstore for 30years. Everything from the coolest kids bikes to the fastest racers, this place has everything you need to get kitted out and ready for the road. Depending on how much you want to spend of course. things can get expensive! I got my first bike here one Christmas(900 gears– super saddle — extra suspension, wings, turbo boosters the whole lot!), and had not returned until recently. I found the staff to be helpful. a bit talky, but like anything you have to learn the lingo…(it seems i speak less bike than i do Japanese!) The place is full of bikes, both new and old, so there is an option for a second hand bike here too.
