We decided to have lunch before heading to the Abbey, but found a huge queue in the main Mitchell’s café, And it wasn’t moving. It was lunchtime. There was plenty of tables and space to sit down in, just getting to the food was going to be the hard part. So we decided to leave altogether to go find lunch somewhere else and come back to see the Abbey tomorrow. Outside again and I spot a smaller café off to the right that had tables and chairs out front. Result! It’s self-service, apart from the till. I opted for a mini quiche that was delicious. My partner went for a pre-made sandwich. We were mighty happy to find the little offshoot of the café and there was little or no queue. Still a bit peeved they cannot handle the numbers the place is likely to get at lunchtime in they main part of the café.

Don’t let the cafeteria-style setup fool you; Mitchell’s has some high-quality eats. I had a delicious roast beef sandwich with rocket and horseradish mayo. The bread was a multigrain seeded bun baked fresh on the premises. ~7EUR with a salad. They also have soups, a variety of hot items and a sizable number of desserts. Sadly though, I must report their coffees come from a machine. Sure, it’s Bewley’s, so it’s decent enough. But that’s no excuse!
