The logical thing to do after a cocktail making event is to buy more alcohol. Logical like gravity was to Newton, if I lived back then I think we would have understood each other. The moment I entered a voice spoke to me as I eyed up the fridge like a cheap easy slut(the fridge being the cheap slut. I’m an angel on high). «How are you?!» «One of those days mate — you know yourself, need a cold beer.» Then the foreign voice was behind me. «I can help you.» «Ohhhh! Can you now?!» «Yes. Talk to me. Tell me what you like.» «I’m not into anything heavy you know?» «So nothing too yeasty?» «God no! No I like something light, golden, fresh, refreshing… Eaaasssyyy.» «Oh.» “Don’t need none of your complicated shizzel. Too tired for that.” «OK so you need this Russian, this American and this German.» «Oh I don’t know about the German.» «Trust me you will love the German,» said the man with what I now definitely registered as a German accent. «I trust you.» Small but unique range of beers, seaweed beer from Scotland anyone? Their best range is their wines but they have some great deals daily. You know what the German was the best, Helles Schlenkerla Lager… Smokey yet direct! P.S As you can see from my updated review the service has improved so that will highlight how updates are important folks!

I have as of late, and wherefore I know not, found myself with the urge to add some sophistication to my life. Perhaps it’s my newfound love of expensive chocolates and fancy tea cups, or perhaps the fact that my mother and grandmother are travelling across the Atlantic to visit my home next week… for the first time in my adult life, but I wanted to have a few bottles of wine stashed away for these or future guests. Being pretty uneducated in the world of fine wines(save for the wine tasting class I took at the Culinary Institute of America where I learned that 1. The teacher probably knows when you are fake-spitting out the wine and 2. When in doubt, go with a Riesling) I decided to make my way to OddBins and rely on the wine savvy staff for my needs of from vine. The walls are decked out with bottles and helpful reviews and suggestions are posted around on various recommended or featured wines. Each section is labeled: New Zealand, Australia, Chile, France, etc. I wandered around a bit, trying to look knowledgeable, and was soon approached by a staff member: Staff: Can I help you find anything? Me: What do you have in terms of a Riesling? Staff: Well if you’ll follow me… About 15 minutes later, I had a crash course in French and Chilean Rieslings. I asked her if a Riesling would stand up to expensive chocolates, and she pointed me in the direction of a fruity red — one of her favourites. I went to the counter with a Rose, a White, and a Red and was happy to hear I would get 10% off my purchase as well. All in all, I paid about € 30 for the three, which she assured me were very nice wines. I just had the Skuttlebutt Rose with my dinner, and I’m very happy with it. Recommended for wine beginners and up!

Did you know that they make wine outside of France these days? Seriously, they totally do! Like in Australia and everywhere, dude! Oddbins makes you want to learn interesting wine-facts like this, with it’s charming wooden corridor shop stacked floor to ceiling with bottles of every creed imaginable. They even help with handy hand-written labels expounding on the bouquet of a bottle here and there. Yep, this is definitely a wine connoisseurs delight, but don’t buy the wine called ‘Conosur’ because it’s horrible.

They specialise more in wines than anything else but you can also get your average collection of booze. It just gives it a nice little expensive feel to the whole experience of getting drunk… why pick up 2 litres of cider in tescos when you could be swaning in here with your top hat… «a bulmers please» says you with a monacle in one eye and a cane tucked tight up under your arm… waistcoat with tails and all… …ah yes… the Oddbins experience

If you love wine, you’ll love Oddbins. The wines are divided into geographical regions, there’s tasting notes on selected bottles, and the staff really know their stuff. I always keep an eye on the blackboard for the good value specials. Sometimes they have Moet for thirty quid, which is about as cheap as it is duty free! If you’re buying a mixed dozen ask for a discount — you never know what they might say. Whatever your taste, whatever your budget, you’ll find a wine to suit at Oddbins.
