Thought I’d give this place a shot after walking by it a million times on the way to the loo in the SSG Shopping Centre. Basically basic, they get a star for cheerful service, a star for fairly cheap prices, and… meh…that’s about it. My poached egg was cooked to the point of hockey-puck status, the bacon looked like the same shoe leather I had replaced on my boots last week and tasted about the same, but there was plenty of bread for toast and the coffee was fairly decent. I waffled over giving them a star for having comfy booths and options to sit«inside» the café itself or «outside» in the passageway that has a cool view of innards of the shopping centre and lots of natural light. Sadly, the abused egg gloominess won out. Bottom line: if I wanted a quiet, secluded, somewhat cozy, spot to have a chat with somebody about a job, a performance review, or a tryst, I might go back…

Once a bustling place for lunch, the coffee shop on the top of Stephen’s Green has since quieted down. Now that it is called Perc-Up, there’s less of a buzz about it. However, this is most likely due to the fact that people have little money to spend. Perc-Up still remains a good choice if you’re lunching in the area. The café has plenty of tables, some inside and others outside in the hallway of the shopping centre. The service is not bad either: you’ll get a smile and a hello when you walk in. The lunch fare is nothing special though, just sandwiches, paninis, salads and soups. These options are made with basic ingredients such as ham, chicken, cheddar and tomato. It also serves a full Irish breakfast for 9 Euro. I would recommend this place to fussy eaters who are afraid of trying new things.
