As you walk up O’Connell Street you may wonder who in gods name this guy is and why is he given such a lovely spot in the centre of Dublin. Well it beats the hell out of me to be honest. The statue is quite nice, traditional and not too exciting but it certainly doesn’t look bad. But why? So i wikipedia-ed the guy and even Wiki is struggling to justify it to me. It seems he was Lord Deputy of Ireland, and chairman of the Dublin City Waterworks scheme… hmmm… ok perhaps that’s quite important. if not very important. and perhaps it tells me that while we may be a country who loves a good Romantic Hero dying for his country… that there were many back then who did their part to keep the country together in different ways… but still, considering the location of the statue and it being placed between a Martyr for the state and Trade union leader that fought for Workers rights like no other of his time… it still seems a little out of place.
