You have to walk very slowly so as to catch the turn off for this hidden treasure. St. Mary’s Abbey is one of Dublin’s best kept secrets. It was once the wealthiest Cistercian Abbey in Ireland. Today only two rooms remain — the Chapter House and the Slype. It was founded in 1139, now that is old! It played a large role in the running of the country until until Henry VIII put an end to it in 1539. It also was were«Silken» Thomas Fitzgerald started his unsuccessful rebellion in 1534. It’s also mentioned in Ulysses by James Joyce. Inside is a fascinating display which is free to view. You should ring ahead to plan a tour.
