I will take the risk of enduring the wrath of folks calling me xenophobic for my following few sentences. The French really don’t like to rush their food. Which is great and all but if you just have an hour to spare for lunch don’t come here. It took about 2 hours to eat a tiny bowl of soup and salad. The place was practically empty. Our server was charming and fabulous as most French people are and apparently they can survive a lot longer on tiny amounts of food than I can. I am a Celtic warrior. I need lots of food to climb trees and run away from Saxons. The soup was carrot and good but the portion was tiny. Again go here if you want to be lady like, I looked like a hungry dog still sniffing around for more. The salad was a no. Chicken was dry. Hardly any dressing. So why the 4 stars? It’s a wine bar, it says it in the title. Wine wise it has a wonderful selection. The space is huge and fantastic. Very rustic with mis-matched furniture and very cool bohemian chic French attitude. I would highly recommend going there to mull over wine and a book and some cheese. You won’t be rushed. As much as it annoyed me at the time, in the context of business that is their winning formula.

My first trip to Ormond Wine Bar revealed a much larger than expected venue which is comfortable and welcoming with quirky twists of décor. The service though slow was good and the food was delicious. I had a tomato soup with coriander and crème fraîche to start, followed by a fillet of salmon with grilled fresh vegetables — yum. The menu is not very extensive but what I had was very tasty(and healthy). At € 13.00 for a main course, it is reasonably priced too. I’ll definitely be back.

An un-promising front hides a real gem with a changing selection of wines, friendly(if quirky) service and delightful food at excellent prices. Tip: be patient with your waiting staff and they will surprise you.

Back when The Ormond Wine Bar’s current home was The Bridge Gallery, I admit I did wonder what the place would be like for parties. Today, while I weep for the absence of art in Dublin, I’m delighted my inner monologue’s question has an answer. AMAZING. The space has always been(since the gallery days) beautiful, and the current owners have brought the place on to new cool elegance. With crisply dressed tables, long leather benches and a slinky, slick den down the back, I’m loving this new look. There’s clearly a few kindred spirits on staff, as the wine bar plays host to a cool list of events — live music, exhibitions and dancing — throughout the month.
