How can I say this, Über is not popular in Dublin/Ireland. A company called Hailo has the market sewn up because 1) They use properly licenced taxis and drivers(taxis can use Bus Lanes which can mean a 50% quicker journey than a private car/limo !) 2) The law in Ireland states that a private vehicle is not insured to carry paying passengers — any driver doing so can be fined/banned from driving. SO, the only times it’s difficult to get a taxi in Dublin are Christmas eve and NewYears eve, and even Hailo /Über would be impossible to get on these nights too: Q

As a heavy Über user at home I was excited about trying it out in Europe. Paris, London, Geneva all works great. Dublin, uuuuuuuh that would be a no. First of all. THEYDON’T TELLYOUALLTHEUBERSARETAXIS. So after ordering twice and cancelling, one of the taxi drivers finally informed of this little, teeny, tiny detail!!! So took the ride, my intention was to go into town during a layover for some genuine Irish experiences. BIGDISAPPOINTMENT. Driver was Polish and although in the country for 8 years«doesn’t know much about the area» So anyways he got me to town and I managed to have a good time, then tried to Über back. Summoned one up and saw it on the map a few blocks from the main taxi stop but it didn’t move! Couldn’t find it in the sea of taxis and cancelled twice again! Just ended up taking a «regular» taxi back. Then on top of all that I’m continuing to argue with customer service on the cancellation charges. Dublin Über, definitely not ready for prime time!

I’ve used Über in a few cities and unfortunatly Dublin is lagging very far behind. When we first arrived in Dublin back in March, the only category available was Über Black which one of the Premium cars(suited driver, plush car, bottled water) which is great for a speical occasion, but too expensive for day to day. They’ve only recently rolled out Über X which is the more standard class. In London it was great. Roughly half the price of a black cab, a nice car(normally a prius), quick to arrive and a friendly driver. Unfortunatly, none of those really apply to Dublin. The first time I tried to order an Über X the arrival time said 15 minutes which was fine — unfortunatly when i looked 10 minutes later it still said 15 minutes so i cancelled and ordered one via Hailo which arrived in 2 minutes. When i actually got one i was dissapointed that it was just a standard city cab which had doubled up with hailo(one phone taking über orders, one taking Über). You can’t critcise a driver wanting to stay busy but he wasn’t the nicest chap and his cab was dirty. Again it wasn’t the quickest to arrive. Also, because Dublin cabs are cheap anyway Über doesn’t have that advantage over them. So unfortunatly, Über for me has gone from a quick, cheap, freindly alternative to a worse service than city cabs. It doesn’t bode well for their future! I’ll give 5 stars for Über Black and — 3 stars for UberX(time, cost, service)

So throughout my European trip I have been using Über, it’s easy, fast & paperless, you don’t have to worry about having the right amount of money because payment is taken care from the app. Just landed into Dublin and needed a ride to the hotel, saw there was UberBlack cars in the area, so I ordered one up, driver was confirmed and headed our way. It appears that only cars at this time are UberBlack. Driver was Jimmy, and he was amazing, I cannot give enough praise to this man, he was full of information about Dublin, even schooled me on Gaelic football as we drove by the stadium but what he also told me was that Über had only been in Dublin for 3 weeks. Hope Über takes off well in Dublin and that Jimmy has fun with it! Über is a great service glad to have used it throughout my trip.
