Windjammer

Shush now. If you find yourself thinking it’s WAAAAYYY too early in the morning for a drink, consider two things:
1) It’s cocktail hour somewhere in the world
2) The Wind Jammer is open
For those expecting grunge and grime, it’s pleasantly clean, the Guinness is great, the barman friendly and rest of the clientele cover the spectrum of obscure, odd, dodgy, normal and restless. And if you find yourself there at 7:30AM, ask yourself — which one of those types are you? Enjoy :-)

Bar opens early. Working class crowd and local crowd that comes here.
Interior looks like its been remodeled lately. Barkeep was friendly.
From a tourist perspective, its not close to any tourist attractions so there may be no reason to come here. (except for the thrifty car rental nearby).

Everyone in this bar was friendly and funny! Thanks for the great time helping drink off our jet lag and teaching us Irish.

OK, picture this. It’s the far future. The apocalypse. You’re the last person left alive. You head down to the Windjammer for a quick one.
It’s closed. I don’t believe this. When has that ever happened before?
What a terrible future that would be

The Wind Jammer has had a face lift inside and out recently. The Guinness is very good. Very friendly atmosphere mainly due to the very welcoming barmen.

Inner city Dublin pub, good pint, Sky TV, no pretensions, proper pub.

The Wind Jammer on Townsend St is one of Dublin’s «early houses», that is, pubs that open at half seven in the morning. The Wind Jammer is not, however, one of the really fun early houses. For fun early houses that serve already somewhat inebriated people, try The Chancery.
The Wind Jammer is the type of early house that caters to shift workers and Gardaí from Pearse St coming off the night shift. Apart from a few couples the morning after the Trinity Ball, they wouldn’t let in too many post-​club revellers. The door is closed most early mornings, and they have a CCTV camera to give ya a good hard scrutinising before they’ll let you in. The only time I was there for early pints, there was only one other group of young lads there and the barman looked like he was about to stop serving them.
During the rest of the day and night, the Wind Jammer is a quiet pub frequented mainly by old, grumpy locals, who would sooner bite your head off than ask you the time of day.
If you’re really desperate for a drink and can’t make it til half ten when the rest of the pubs open, by all means go to The Wind Jammer. Otherwise, there isn’t that much else to recommend to it.

Oh, one other thing. The Wind Jammer is the closest pub to Windmll Lane Studios, so U2 and The Saw Doctors among others have retired there for post-​recording session pints over the years.
