For a town that has at least three Boat Clubs, a major sea port and a fishing industry to boot it is no surprise that the marina here is big business. There are more and more privately owned boats popping up in the harbour area every year. The Marina has undergone an upgrade in the last few years and it has sprawled out into the west side of the harbour. A big break water/pier has been constructed off the inside of the West Pier to give more stability to the water and also allows for yet another docking area just off the west pier. Its quite a pleasant place to go for a sit down and listening to the rattle of lines off masts and the lapping of water is very soothing.

Apart from its obvious claim to fame as Ireland’s biggest marina(it now boasts 800 berths) Dun Laoghaire Marina is a wonderful place to spend a day relaxing by the sea. Take a walk along the East and West piers which were built in the 1800s, admire the boats in the marina, or look in the opposite direction for fabulous views of Dublin Harbour and Howth. There is a gorgeous rotunda on the East pier and this is the perfect place for some Sunday afternoon wanderings with family or friends and the obligatory ice cream. I happened to be there to witness a huge storm rolling in. The 180 degree ocean views meant that this was spectacular. Just don’t get caught out on the pier if those storms start heading your way!
