The day i walked into Music City and saw the closing down sign… i wondered if Golden Discs would shape up and finally provide a proper selection of decent cutting edge new and old music. .Alas, the only thing Golden Discs is good for is a good deal on some old reliable DVDs and Cd’s the kind of stuff that everyone has already… the only time i ever buy anything here is when i have absolutely no idea what to get for my dad at Christmas. they always have some silly box set here at Christmas for a 5er. other than that Golden Discs is for those who want to pick up the latest fad. they have some computer games and some cheap accessories that may be helpful. The staff are real nice and chatty… and i wonder if they wish they had a better selection of music to sell, because their other stores throughout Dublin have the same if not a worse selection on offer.

Golden Discs in Nutgrove Shopping Centre has been there for years and as long as people still are buying Foster and Allen and Daniel O Donnell Greatest Hits, that great oxymoron of a title, it will still be here for years to come. They have a lot of old Irish favourites and best sellers and Top 40 Irish Chart crap, but still, they are priced slightly cheaper than some of the other more famous music chain stores, and they are Irish, so go buy Irish!

Appetite for Destruction is still among Golden Discs top 100 selling albums, that says a lot. Don’t expect to find Yo La Tengos demo tapes in here, but do expect some fairly decent deals on more mainstream stuff. As a general rule though, I don’t trust any record store which gives over more space for singles than albums. Top 40 heaven, for anyone who’s interested.
