A large group of us descended, quite ravenous, upon Neville’s on a sunny afternoon in September. It was midweek and very quiet and so we found ourselves the only folk to take up shop in the rather pretty beer garden out the back. There were lots of tables in the sun and pretty flower boxes scattered about. No camera with me so unfortunately no photos this trip! The menu is quite vast, offering the usual pub grub, grill(steaks, lamb, chicken, burgers), sandwiches, soup, chowder, garlic mushrooms and the like, but have a smaller than expected choice of fish dishes. They also have a vegetarian option(pasta based) which was on the daily specials sheet and so probably changes throughout the year, and a kids menu. Our party ordered a selection of beef burgers, cod and chips/mash, the blt, and the lamb along with some pints. They have a selection of Irish beer and O’haras on tap. The cod was well prepared, fresh and with tasty batter but a wee bit heavier than I personally like. I got mash and salad instead of chips and it was lovely. I did sample the chips(can never resist one or two!) and they were crisp and fresh too, tasted homemade, but I could be mistaken. Deserts too were winners with the Eton mess coming in first for me — anything that utilises the local strawberries of Wexford is a winner in my book! Wasn’t sure what to expect, but lesson learnt; don’t judge by appearances. Friendly and relaxed service(which hopefully remains when they are busier), great quality food, but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary if you are vegetarian or vegan as there’s not much on offer, or at least wasn’t when we visited!

My husband and I stopped here while driving the ring of hook in Wexford for a weekend away. I had heard from another friend that this was a great pub to stop into for food. By the time we stopped in for lunch, it was 2:30 pm on a Sunday, so I figured we would have missed the majority of the after church crowd of locals. The pub was somewhat busy, but not crazy busy. I ordered a coffee and fish and chips, and my husband ordered chicken strips and water. I don’t know what it was about my accent, but for some reason, NOONE in Wexford could understand anything I was saying, but could understand my husband. So he ended up having to take over the ordering. The food eventually came out, but our drinks still had not arrived, so we had to order them again. Once everything was out, it did taste fine. I really wasn’t sure what to write here, because I thought the place was just«okay.» I would probably go here again, mostly because there is nothing else really around, but I didn’t think it was anything outstanding.

So here we are in deepest darkest Wexford, where roads with grass in the middle and legitimate highways. Despite it being february we decided to go to the beach near Fethard. Afterwards we thought we might want a pint(hair of the dog!) and our designated driver wondered if there was such a thing as proper coffee in this part of the country, so we were left with pondering which of the pubs would stare at us less on entry. Frightened away from other pubs we were mollified by the lavazza sign outside Nevilles and went in to find and friendly atmosphere and a lovely blend of modern and traditional. After ordering pints, water, crisps and coffee, we had a look at the food menu. We weren’t really hungry as we’d recently had a huge brunch, but the menu looked so good we tried a few things. I had a totally gorgeous rice pudding and one of our party had the garlic mushrooms — this only left us feeling even more sorry that we couldn’t stay for a meal. Everything was lovely, especially the open fire and friendly service. We made a note to pop in for a proper meal when next in the area. Dusk and fog began to descend so we headed for home!
