Dunguaire Castle

Nice photo opportunity. Not much more though. Can live without. Only made a quick stopover with the tour bus here.
The interior of the castle is usually open for visitors, or so we were told, but was closed for the time we went there unfortunately. The castle is quite small though (more like a tower of sorts), so didn’t feel like missing out on much.

I thought this castle and the surrounding area was gorgeous and probably one of the greatest highlights of my first trip to Ireland.

Kinvara. Der eigentliche Grund dafür war Dunguaire Castle, bekannt aus fast jedem
Bildband und jedem Kalender mit Irlandmotiven. Wir wollten es aber im Original sehen.
Dunguaire Castle ist keine Burg im eigentlichen Sinne, natürlich erst recht kein Schloß. Vielmehr handelt es sich um ein Paradebeispiel der typisch irischen Herrschaftsarchitektur der frühen Neuzeit: ein sogenanntes Tower House. Ein mehrgeschossiges, aus großen Steinen gefügtes Haus, mit hoch angelegtem Eingang und schmalen schießschartenähnlichen Fenstern. Die Tower Houses dienten den irischen Großgrundbesitzern und den keltirischen Clanchiefs als «Residenz».
Dunguaire Castle war nach der Sage der Wohnsitz von Guaire, dem König der westirischen Provinz Connaught, der für seine Gastfreundschaft berühmt war, und der in der Legende von der «Straße des Geschirrs» (Bothar na Mias) verewigt wurde.
Tatsächlich wurde dieses Tower House aber erst zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts von dem keltirischen Clan der O’ Hynes erbaut. Im 17. Jahrhundert wurde es von der mächtigen iro-​normannischen Familie der Martyns aus Galway übernommen, die im Zuge der englischen Eroberung und Durchdringung Irlands ins Land gekommen war. Im 17. Jahrhundert begann der Verfall von Dunguaire Castle, bis es 1924 von dem berühmten Dubliner Arzt und Mäzen des Schriftstellers James Joyce gekauft wurde, der auch mit der Restaurierung des Tower Houses begann. 1954 übernahm die englische Lady Ampthill das Castle und vollendete die Restaurierung.
Dunguaire Castle kann besichtigt werden. Unmittelbar hinter dem Eingang befindet sich ein kleines Souvenirgeschäft, vor dem auch die Eintrittskarten verkauft werden. Von hier aus geht es über eine schmale Wendeltreppe zu den einzelnen Etagen. Jede Etage ist in einem anderen Stil konzipiert. Eine von ihnen als Rittersaal, mit alten irischen Wappen an den Wänden, Refektoriumstischen und einer kleinen Bühne. Hier finden regelmäßig mittelalterliche Bankette statt. Die oberste Etage ist im Stil der später 1950er eingerichtet und könnte durchaus die Wohnung der Lady Ampthill gewesen sein. Von hier aus gelangt man auch auf den schmalen zinnenbesetzten Wehrgang, der einen prächtigen Ausblick auf die Bucht von Kinvara bietet.
Wer den Westen Irlands bereist, sollte sich den Besuch Dunguaire Castles nicht entgehen lassen. Obwohl kommerziell genutzt, atmet dieses alte Gemäuer irgendwie auch das Flair des alten Irland, und man spürt die von nationalbewußten Iren beschworene «Irishness».

Went here for a medieval night. It was ok but the whole thing felt rushed. They put on two shows in an evening and do try to push you through pretty quickly. Beautiful castle but a mediocre medieval night :-(

Oh look a castle! The whole bus in unison «ooohhhh» (like the little martians in Toy Story). I was more like «eh», don’t get me wrong castles are cool but this one didn’t really amount to much.
The scenery surrounding it is pleasant but the castle itself isn’t very grand. I would have liked to go inside and get a few from the top but it was something like 8 euro to do so. I understand they have to make money to keep everything up to shape but that was a little ridiculous. We didn’t stay long but I did read that they have a banquet style dinner with live music, that might have helped my view of the place.
** Even though I didn’t care for the castle that much I got one of my favorite pictures in this location. I also like that someone put this under a category of a zoo.

The castle is a beautiful structure in a great location. Definitely worth the drive to see it. Dunguaire Castle is a 16^th-​century tower house on the southeastern shore of Galway Bay in County Galway, Ireland, near Kinvarra. The castle’s 75-​foot tower and its defensive wall have been restored to excellent condition, and the grounds are open to tourists during the summer. It is thought to be the most photographed castle in Ireland.

My husband and I decided to join the tour groups for one night for a medieval castle banquet. We went in with an open mind figuring it would be hokey but fun, and food fair at best. We were pleasantly surprised.
First off, this banquet, although plays some homage to the fact it’s in a castle, is not all that medieval. Our food was rather modern, as was the entertainment. That said the food was simple, but yummy (especially the potatoe and leak soup). The entertainment was really great — wonderful diverse singing, and great harp playing.
I would recommend it to any foreigner looking for a good night out with some authentic Irish music in a castle.
