Okay, stop shaking your head. I know what you are thinking…1) this boy is reviewing McDonalds? and 2) he gave it 4 stars? I am not suffering from a case of H1N1 after my recent trip to Ireland. Let me explain. First, here’s the problem — you are thinking of McDonalds in 2009 America. Erase that. Think back to McDonalds 1978 back when it was a good establishment to get a meal. In March I visited England, Scotland and Wales and there were McDonalds, which I happened to stop at a couple. The menu was completely different than what we see in the US. They had the McLegend and other sandwhiches I didn’t know. The portions were small, the«large» drink was our small and you didn’t get ice. I had the same expectations in Ireland, but I was hungry and this Galway location was just down from my hotel, so I stopped. The first surprise I found was the number of customers. The parking lot was full. I went inside and there was a long line. Lots of kids in the restaurant, some of them running about(no PlayLand over there), The menu was basically the same we have, although somewhat scaled down. There was a new sandwich called the M, which I almost tried, but it looked like a slider on flatbread. I stuck with the standards. I ordered the sausage McMuffin with egg in the morning and a coffee. The sandwich was larger than what we get today in the US(probably in an effort to promote the US recession by keeping the price the same and giving a smaller product) and the quality was good. It was actually fresh and tasted like real egg and sausage. Yummy. Another day I stopped in the afternoon and took part in their mint chocolate chip McFlurry. The sign mentioned the excitement of «tasting the bubbles», which referred to these chocolate saucer pieces added. They didn’t really do much for me, but overall it was good. I won’t write another McDonalds review about a different location, but I will just mention that I stopped in one outside of Belfast in Northern Ireland and it was just as good. Again with a line to the door and crowds of people dining in. These locations in Ireland made me remember what made McDonalds an icon in the older days and I think they have gotten away from the in US. And really what says«road trip» like a stop at McDonalds? If you want a break from the black pudding or white pudding while dining on Full Irish Breakfasts in Ireland, give olé’ McDonalds a try. You will be surprised!
