DOTHISWHENYOUGETTOINISHEER. This was my third trip to Inisheer and my first time renting a bicycle there. It was so, so worth it. Never would I go back here and not do this. For only € 10 you can have the bike for the ENTIREDAY. The horse and carriage rides are € 50 and only take you to a few places. The best part about the bike rental is that it’s all based on trust. Be a nice person and do your part to keep it this way. You don’t have to sign forms, you don’t have sign insurance cards. You just show up, ask for a bicycle, hand over € 10 euros, and then receive your key to exploring this hauntingly gorgeous island. Without the aid of a bike, it’s difficult to see the whole island, as it will take about 1.5 hours just to cover the most popular parts on foot. With the bike, you can race out to the shipwreck and down to the lighthouse in no time. You can feel the glorious breeze against your face, suck in the fresh air, feel your heart pumping — you can gaze out at the endless stone walls, crumbling castles, verdant pastures and white cottages as you think about just how lucky you are to be experiencing this all. Sure you’ll huff and puff up some major hills and feel the burn in your thighs as you press up the incline to O’Brien’s castle… but it’s all worth it in the name of exploration and inspiration. I highly recommend renting these bikes. And I highly recommend visiting Inisheer. It’s peaceful, untouched, soulful and desolate all at the same time.
