I was in Kells recently for a wedding afters the weekend before Valentines day. As my husband and I are total eejits we forgot that restaurants would probably be busy this particular weekend and failed to book a table in the restaurant adjoining our hotel before we arrived. On the recommendation of a friend, who is a Kells local, we headed up to Cross Street Bistro to see if they had room for us. Thankfully, because we wanted to eat fairly early, they did. The restaurant had been decorated with lots of red balloons and pink roses which was a little twee but nice that they made an effort. I made plenty of jokes about accidental Valentines dinner since we both normally can’t be arsed with it and we were there more for pre-wedding sustenance rather than romance. The bistro has a very good value all night early bird(yes I know…) which is three courses with tea and coffee for 20 euro. I went for the chicken wings with blue cheese dressing to start, the wings were lacking a little in spice but the blue cheese dressing was amazing, I even kept the pot with me to have with my mains as well(I’m classy like that). For main I went for the burger which I proceeded to burn my mouth on and was a little dry but my god the size of it, it was enormous. On reflection I probably should have had something different, I’m a big fan of specialist burger chains like GBK and the Counter and this was poor in comparison. For dessert I had the Bailey’s cheesecake which was really delicious and pumped full of Baileys, yum yum. While I was a bit let down by the food I have to say that the service was excellent, the owner(I think?) was a really sound guy, very attentive and chatty. A lot of the other patrons seemed to be regulars which was a good sign, by the time we were leaving at around 7.45 most of the tables were full. If I found myself in Kells again I’d definitely pop in.
