Nicks Restaurant

Arrivés à Killorglin en début de soirée, nous avons fait le tour des restaurants et nous sommes finalement arrêtés dans celui-​ci qui avait bonne allure. Une fois à l’intérieur, deux ambiances au choix, la partie restaurant qui fait un peu kitch avec son joueur de piano habillé en blanc et une partie bar/​pub légèrement plus détendue et agréable.
Au menu, des plats relativement simples comme des fish cakes, des burgers, etc… Les assiettes sont bien dressées mais la cuisine est… simple, un peu décevante même. Mon steack était trop cuit et pas d’une qualité exceptionnelle… Bref, j’ai un peu regretté mon choix de plat… et de restaurant…

Great restaurant/​pub. Lobster Thermador with a slightly battered scampi to start was delightful. Even met a young lady at the bar that joined us. My Irish friend says it’s his favorite restaurant in Ireland. Well he took me there on the rainy drive down to Waterville. If you are on the western side of The Ring of Kerry stop in and give it a try. John Foley is the proprietor.

The food was out of this world! I was with a large group of 11 and they seated us together and accommodated the kids picky food choices. I had the salmon with prawns and it was AMAZING! I would highly recommend that. It was drizzled with a fabulous light sauce. For an appetizer the chicken wings were delicious. The were coated in a sweet sauce and weren’t spicy at all! For dessert I had a brownie that was more of a dark chocolate than milk chocolate. Overall wonderful experience!

The food was really good. The kitchen is clearly on their game. But the wait service was really lacking. I asked for a wine menu, which our waiter brought but then he never came back. I told two different bussers that I wanted to order wine and they said they’d tell my waiter, but he still never appeared. He seemed like he was a manager or head waiter, and was clearly very busy, I don’t think he should have been waiting on tables. We finally had to flag down a different waiter to get our check at the end.

A piano bar restaurant that does seafood! And sure enough there was a baby grand in the bar. On this occasion there was no live music, but pleasant piano numbers piped throughout the place.
There is a choice of eating in the bar, from the bar food menu, or in the restaurant from that menu. We opted for the latter.
The complimentary bread for the table was delicious, kudos for that.
I had fish and chips, my partner had the trio of fish. The food was fine, adequate but I do think its over a tad priced for the standard. I kinda wished we had opted the bar food menu instead, might have been better value.
I ordered a glass of wine too, which was generous, but just about drinkable. It was a Sauvignon Blanc if memory serves me.
Staff were nice, but forgot my request for ketchup. And there was coffee grounds on the rim of my espresso cup. Mediocre service, ok food with a big price tag.
Sol y Sombra, while equally as pricey, is much better for food and service.

Tasty food! Great seafood selection. I went for Lobster and boy was it yum! Fantastic family run business. Small enough bar area at the front and lots of seats for dining elsewhere. We got a nice cozy table in the corner for my party of 5.
Highly recommended.

Wer sich schon im gemütlichem Örtchen Killorglin einfindet, muss bei Nick’s vorbei. Die Vorurteile zum irischem Essen finden hier ein Contra, doch sollte man nicht vergessen, dass die Preise generell in Irland höher sind als für deutsche Geschmäcker. Der Unterschied liegt klar beim höheren Verdienst.
Doch die Stimmung und der Flair sind unbeschreiblich. 2008 war noch J.P. (John Patric) im Nick’s als Klavierspieler beschäftigt und verzauberte Nick’s zurück in die gute alte Zeit. Romantische aber auch gemütliche irische Stimmung sind vorher bestimmt. Ein Muss auf der Liste

Solltet ihr jemals in die Gegend von Killorglin kommen, unbedingt ein Dinner bei Nick’s einplanen.
Killorglin ist übrigens ein idealer Ausgangspunkt, um den Ring of Kerry abzufahren. Eine Übernachtung hier lohnt sich. Es gibt auch jede Menge Pubs…
Zurück zu Nick’s:
Man kann dieses Restaurant unbenommen als eines der besten Fischrestaurants in Irland einstufen. Zur Vorspeise empfehlen sich Austern aus eigener Zucht. Die Fischplatte ist vom Feinsten, aber auch Lamm und Steaks sind nicht zu verachten.
Die Weinkarte ist sehr vielfältig. Es gibt auch Tröpfchen zu reasonable prices.
Ich habe mich immer wieder gewundert, dass sich in so einem kleinen Nest ein derartig gutes Restaurant halten kann. Qualität spricht halt für sich.
Die Atmosphäre ist auch sehr angenehm. In dem alten Haus befindet sich unten eine Bar, an der man seinen Apero schlürfen kann. Schon hier kann man leicht mit anderen, auf einen Tisch Wartenden, ins Gespräch kommen. Ein Pianospieler, der etwa pro Stunde mindestens ein Guinness reinzieht und dadurch erstmal besser, anschliessend aber wieder schlechter wird, lockert die Atmosphäre ungemein auf…
Das Haus ist etwas verwinkelt. Am liebsten sass ich im obersten Stockwerk.
Übrigens ist Killorglin über den Kerry-​Airport very easy mit Ryanair zu erreichen.
