This opened in Oranmore just this week and although the owners have outlets in Galway city and Clarinbridge(and I ‘like’ them on Facebook), it was my first time seeing how it operates. The premises is large, with plenty of room between tables and for parents with pushchairs to negotiate the space. The décor owes a lot to Cathy Kidston — it’s a modern building, so the ‘softening’ effect of the cabbage-print wallpaper is welcome. I went in for a late lunch and found it packed. Thinking back, my arrival coincided with the final bell at the nearby primary school. But I found a seat at a table(I kinda imposed on two women sitting at a table for 4) and I noticed that as soon as a table in the restaurant cleared, it was soon occupied. I was handed a menu which had a broad range of snack ideas. I noted that breakfast was served until 12, and there was a handful of dishes under the headings of ‘Salads’, ‘Sandwiches’, etc. A waitress took my order of the pulled pork sandwich and took me through the various options with skill and verve. The sandwich itself was fabulous. The pulled pork was piping hot and came on delicious sourdough with a slaw of apple and beetroot, I think. The side salad was small but contained sprouted beans — the latest ‘super food’, right? Between the sandwich, salad and coffee, I was extremely happy with my order. The staff were warm and friendly and I can see the Poppyseed becoming a firm favourite locally.
