I really wish I could give minus stars for this place and not because of the food. The service in this restaurant is APPALLING if you could even call it service. They literally flung our food at us, my partner, whose birthday we were there to celebrate almost had her face scalded with a place of curry at one point and several other plates after wards. The staff literally grabbed plates whilst stretching over all of us rather than saying excuse me while I lift your place. you may say you get what you pay for, but the food was delicious — you would get better service in any other self serve restaurant where the staff are only too happy to help! To make matters worse at one point the place was overrun with delinquent kids, which the restaurant staff/managers seemed more keen on keeping on the right side of that getting rd. Unless you are just running in here for a cheap bite and don’t care much for service, please do yourself a favour and steer well clear!

Back in the day this used to be called the Empress and even in a village saturated with restaurants this was considered very exclusive(in the sense that to Z-list celebs and try hards if somewhere’s really pricey then it’s exclusive). Rumours abounded that one portion of fried rice cost £6(yes that’s right punts remember them?) and that’s why I say rumours because as a child no thought it worth bringing me in there. The place packed up a few years ago(I heard the owner wasn’t paying his taxes! So what the hell was he doing charging £6 a dish of rice?). In it’s place had sprung Amerta. Amerta is the polar opposite of the Empress, at least in the price stakes, but we’l get to that. One thing it has inherited is a nice location just halfway down the road between the main crux of Monkstown village and the seafront. It’s actually just a door at ground level that leads you up onto the first floor where it expands out into the main restaurant. It has the atmosphere that I love about all Oriental restaurants; moderately lit, dark tones, plenty of mirrors and intriguing paintings on the walls. But as I said it went the opposite way in terms of price. It’s now known as cheap place to grab something to eat. They charge € 10 for a one person takeaway meal that consists of starter, main course and a drink! Although I’ve never sat down to eat they do similarly competitive deals. I should also mention that their main courses here are seriously BIG. I mean really big. There’s honestly enough in one of them to feed two adults. But as Tyrell says to Roy in Blade Runner ‘The light that burns twice as bright burns for half as long’ or in other words in this case there has to be a trade off between food quality and quantity, particularly if you’re charging next to nothing for the food in the first place. So there’s the rub. The food here is frankly quite poor. I’ve never gotten more than a third the way through one of their main courses without feeling queasy and in fact I’ve never seen any of mates do either. Really it comes down to what you want? A cheap as chips meal or pleasant dining experience? If the latter then avoid!
